This small apartment came with a big challenge: how to create a minimalist and functional space while working around the developer’s “creative” decisions.

Family house in Kaugurciems¹

¹Kaugurciems is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Riga. Originally a fishing village, it evolved over time as many fishermen began renting out their homes to vacationers who came to enjoy the beach and the natural beauty of the area.
The fishermen’s houses in Kaugurciems are small wooden buildings with gable roofs and dormers; however, over time, these houses were expanded to accommodate both the fishermen’s own needs and the guests who visited Kaugurciems for recreation.

People often think of architecture as being about perfect proportions, the golden ratio, and strict canons described as far back as Vitruvius.

But our studio never designs contemporary architecture that way.

In practice, we don’t break façades down into formulas or calculate precise ratios. We rely on an internal sense of proportion and balance — that moment when a volume simply comes together and feels complete.

And yet, sometimes theory catches up with intuition.
That’s what happened with one of our projects: the proportions felt suspiciously familiar — close to 1:1.618. We measured. That’s exactly what it was.
