The end of the Italian colonial project in Libya in the mid 20th century may have dismantled colonialism as a physical, demographic, and political entity.

However, two critical questions remain:

1. How do we engage with an architectural and cultural residue that many now consider inseparable from the identity of Libyan cities?

2. Has this residue "toxified" Libyan space and culture, giving rise to a lingering form of
“internal colonization”?

Downtown historic Benghazi, Libya is a layered city containing a diverse and problematic range of Greek, Roman, Italian colonial, Ottoman Imperial, and Arab cultural and architectural heritage. Since, there are no official national archives, the only historic traces the city once possessed was its physical self. However, after the 2014 civil war damage, Benghazi has been going under a demolishing process threatening to erase an area measuring approximately more than 3,000,000 sqf of built heritage for reconstruction. This vanishing colonial and traumatic history has not been documented, archived or processed. The thesis of this project comes here as a critical response to this erasure while proposing a counter-reconstruction project that takes into consideration the city’s critical past.

Furthermore, as colonial and state-led destruction has been a common crisis in Palestine, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Ukraine and beyond this project aims to engage a regional and global conversation on decolonization through reconstruction.

سنعمل في هذا المشروع بإعتبار الدمار الذي حل بالمنطقة التاريخية (وسط البلاد) في بنغازي كفرصة لإعادة إبتكارما يمكن للمدينة الليبية العصيّة ان تكون عليه ما وراء النزعات التقليدية التي تحاول إستنساخ الماضي او التوجهات الحداثية الغربية التي لا تعبرعن السياق التاريخي والمعاصر للمدينة.

سنقوم بتصميم مقترحات نظرية متعددة الاحجام حضرية و معمارية وفنية كنوع من "الحفريات" التي تعكس تاريخ وثقافات وهويات المدينة بشكل نقدي وفي نفس الوقت تقترح حلول جديدة لمشاكل عملية تخص البنية التحتية والفضاء العام واقتصاد المدينة.

في نهاية المشروع سيتم بناء نماذج 1:1 من المقترحات الفنية كأثاث حضري ليعرض حصرياً في معرض المشروع في منطقة وسط البلاد، بنغازي.

to be hosted by Philomena+ in Philomena+ project room, Heinestraße 40, 1020 Vienna, from Sep 15th to October 20th

Bringing together 13 architects and artists contributions from Vienna (Austria), Casablanca (Morocco), and Benghazi (Libya):

Fatma Alshikhy, Zaynab Abubakr, Karim Alami, Ahd Benchaouech, Zakaria Benchekroun, Raghd Elshaheibi, Azadeh Hariri, Abdulaziz Karad, Nouhaila Karroum, Nama Masoud, Ursula Probst, Ayan Rezaei, Aida Shayegani.

The Placeless Academy is a digital platform that provides an international space to analyze and critique the legacy of modern architecture in the MENA region, and produce alternative critical knowledge beyond the western colonial conception of modernity. Through a South-North collaboration, The Placeless Academy establishes a cross-border educational environment and overcomes didactic and rigid traditional academic systems. The project selected 12 participants into three groups, and consisted of a 1 month digital workshop that hosted several talks by international experts.

This exhibition is curated by: Fatimzahra Benhamza .jpg , Sarri Elfaitouri , Negar Hakim .n.h , and co-organized and mentored by MAMMA, Tajarrod, and Philomena+, and implemented through the Thoulathy/ All-Around Culture program by L’art Rue and MitOst and co-funded by the European Union.

We present to you the mentors of the Placeless Academy:

Fatima Zahra Benhamza

Fatima is a Moroccan architect and visual artist based in Casablanca. Interested in revealing the contemporary urban issues, she observes, questions and reimagines the existing city through architectural drawing, illustration and collage. She has published several essays around these topics. Since 2019, She has been part of different artistic residencies in Morocco and abroad such as: Atelier de l’Observatoire (Morocco,Casablanca-2019), Le Cube Independent Room (Morocco,Rabat- 2020), Andreas Zust Bibliothek ( Switzerland, Alpenhof–2021), Albalad residency (Saudi ARABIA, Jeddah-2022). In 2021 she exhibited her work “Positive Pandemics” at LAAF (Liverpool Arab Arts Festival). In the same year she has been shortlisted along 14 moroccan artists at the MUSTAQBAL NATIONAL PRIZE for painting and drawing as a finalist for under 35 category and been part of a collective exhibition organized by ARTORIUM gallery in Casablanca. In 2022 she exhibited her works “Where is the sun” and “What do you choose to see” respectively in 32bis(Tunis) and Alte Munze (Berlin).

فاطمة هي معمارية وفنانة تشكيلية مغربية مقيمة بالدار البيضاء. مهتمة بالكشف عن القضايا الحضرية المعاصرة، فهي تراقب وتتساءل وتعيد تصور المدينة الحالية من خلال الرسم المعماري والكولاج. نشرت عدة مقالات حول هذه المواضيع. منذ عام 2019 ، كانت جزءًا من إقامات فنية مختلفة في المغرب وخارجها مثل: Atelier de l'Observatoire (المغرب ، الدار البيضاء -2019) ، Le Cube Independent Room (المغرب ، الرباط- 2020) ، Andreas Zust Bibliothek (سويسرا ، Alpenhof –2021) ، إقامة البلد (المملكة العربية السعودية ، جدة - 2022). في عام 2021 عرضت عملها "الأوبئة الإيجابية" في LAAF (مهرجان ليفربول للفنون العربية). في العام نفسه ، تم ترشيحها ضمن القائمة القصيرة إلى جانب 14 فنانًا مغربيًا في جائزة المستقبل الوطنية للرسم كمرشحة نهائية عن فئة أقل من 35 عامًا وكانت جزءًا من معرض جماعي نظمه معرض ARTORIUM في الدار البيضاء. في عام 2022 عرضت أعمالها "أين الشمس" و "ماذا تختار أن ترى" على التوالي في 32bis في تونس و و Alte Munze في برلين

Sarri Elfaitouri

Sarri is a conceptual architect, artists, art curator, and cultural producer based in Benghazi, Libya, and the founder of TAJARROD Architecture and Art Foundation. Sarri’s work investigates contemporary socio-cultural issues, identities and ideologies, and their impact on architecture and cities, and searches for alternative possibilities of creative socio-spatial transformation. His works manifest as: research, theoretical architectural projects, art curation, and collage art. He has published theoretical projects and essays online, and curated/participated in several exhibitions locally and abroad. Sarri has a bachelor degree in architecture, and has 4 years of experience as an early career architect.

نجار حكيم

ولدت في أصفهان / إيران ، ودرست تاريخ الفن في جامعة فيينا. وهي عضو في هيئة تحرير مجلة Memar Magazine و Kunst und Kirche وعملت كمحرر مشارك للعديد من مجلات الفن والعمارة الأخرى في الشرق الأوسط. تقدم حكيم الاستشارات الثقافية والفنية والمعمارية بين أوروبا ومنطقة WANA. قامت بالتعاون مع كريستين بروكباور بتأسيس مؤسسةphilomena + في عام 2016 ، وهي منصة للتعاون الفني بين فنانين من غرب آسيا وشمال إفريقيا والنمسا. وهي قيمة تنظيمية ، وتنظم ورش عمل وندوات ورحلات دراسية إقليمية ، وكانت عضوًا في لجنة التحكيم في العديد من المسابقات المعمارية. حاليا هي أيضا جامعة. مؤخرة. Negar Hakim

Born in Isfahan/Iran, studied art history at the University of Vienna. She is on the editorial board of Memar Magazine and Kunst und Kirche and has acted as co-editor of several other art and architecture magazines in the Middle East. Hakim does intercultural consulting in art and architecture between Europe and WANA region. Together with Christine Bruckbauer founded she philomena+ in 2016, a platform for artistic collaboration between artists from West Asia, North Africa and Austria. She is curator, and organises transregional workshops, seminars and study trips, and has been a jury member for various architectural competitions. Currently she is also a Univ. Ass. (PostDoc) at the TU Wien, with a focus on non-European architecture.
