Mossessian Architecture Award - winning international Architecture practice mossessian & partners has extensive expertise in

mossessian & partners is an international award-winning RIBA Chartered Architecture Practice with expertise in architecture, masterplanning, technological innovation and research. We have won a growing reputation for architecture of the highest calibre. Rejecting the notion of an ‘ivory tower’ design mentality, the practice encourages a design process that is entirely collaborative, alert to the n

eeds of clients and attentive to the requirements of local planning authorities. This unique ‘Black Box’ modus operandi underpins the key design, essential at the commencement of every project. We do not set out to design iconic buildings – we strive to place our buildings in dialogue with their context, environment and culture and improve the Client and End-User’s experience of the building. Architecture must communicate a meaning beyond itself to establish a quality and sense of place. 2010-12 has seen the completion of three buildings: 5 Merchant Square in Paddington, London - nominated for the “UK Country of Honour” Award at MIPIM 2011, Shortlisted for BCO Awards 2011, and recently shortlisted by London Planning Awards 2012 for Best Built Project; ExxonMobil Headquarters in Shanghai and a private residence in Sorède, France. The practice has also completed the design for 23 buildings and a public square in the Msheireb regeneration project in Doha, Qatar, which is due for completion in 2016. This project is currently on site, and has won a number of awards including: MIPIM AR Future Projects Award 2011 - Overall Winner and Mixed Use Winner; and WAF 2012 Future Masterplanning Projects - Winner. mossessian & partners’ most recent win is an urban renewal project in the Medina of Fez, Morocco, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The scheme, currently in construction documentation, has recently been awarded both an Acknowledgement at Holcim Awards 2011 and Highly Commended at WAF 2012 - See more at: http://www.world-architects.com/en/mossessian/source:index_updated_new .H419jUte.dpuf

The site of Place Lalla Yeddouna called to become an important catalyst for economic and social growth and improving the life conditions of craftsmen by increasing the possibilities of marketing their products and services. It constitutes a multiservice platform for the benefit of not only artisans and the local community; but also, of the visitors to the Medina of Fez.

The Medina is a mosaic of small-scale, modest, sand-coloured attached, and continuous construction and its endless labyrinth of narrow streets are crammed with history. The area of Place Lalla Yeddouna, where the city was founded on the two banks of the main river in Fez (“Oued Al Jawahir”), used to be one of the key links between the two sides of the old city.

The programme of approx. 7,400 sqm is located in the historical meeting and trading point of the Medina of Fez, designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1981 and one of the world’s oldest and largest Medina. The competition brief was for the urban design of Place Lalla Yeddouna at the heart of the Medina, the preservation of historic buildings as well as the design of new buildings that would sit comfortably in the traditional urban fabric, yet to be returned to their users, artisans of metal, leather and zelige, so they could benefit of fully revamped and healthy working conditions.

The design is intended to blend in and enhance what makes the city so special – a difficult task to achieve in a few years, when the Medina has developed organically over more than a thousand years.

The site currently comprised thirty-two islets.
The project involved the construction of nine new buildings (including a hotel for artist in residence), the development of Place Lalla Yeddouna, the development of the river banks, and the rehabilitation of the historic bridge as well as eleven existing buildings.

Our strategy was to reconnect Place Lalla Yeddouna to the riverfront and create a pedestrian route across the river and through the Medina, a series of continuous spaces in the rich urban pattern of the Medina’s passageways. This strategy also offers a more logical pedestrian route that leads through the medina; a cellular network of contiguous spaces that is the foundation of the unity of a neighbourhood.
