In an interview with Urban Practice Principal Architect Nuno Soares, the discussion focuses on the “New Planning Proposal for Northern Taipa” and the balance between urban development and the preservation of Macau’s old villages, such as Cheok Ka.

A new intervention begins in the centre of Macau 🏗️

Urban Practice在澳門最重要的城市走廊一—新馬路上的項目進行破土動工。
Breaking ground on a new Urban Practice project along Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, one of Macau’s most significant urban corridors.

該計畫採用當代建築干預手法，保留原有要素並精心重現了歷史立面，維護了建築在街景中的認同與延續性。
The project adopts a contemporary architectural intervention that carefully conserves the historic façade, maintaining the building’s identity and presence within the streetscape.

這項干預手法在延續與革新之間尋求平衡，既保留了城市的記憶，也引入了符合當前需求和未來用途的全新空間框架。
The intervention works between continuity and transformation, retaining the memory of the city whilst introducing a new spatial framework aligned with current needs and future use.

Urban Practice has completed the user experience survey phase of the ARC Sustainability Performance Assessment at USJ - University of Saint Joseph, reinforcing its role in delivering advanced performance-driven solutions in Macau.

ARC 超越了技術指標，捕捉了人們在真實環境下的空間體驗。超過 250 位使用者的參與，結果顯示使用者滿意度很高，尤其是在空氣品質、照明、清潔度和聲學效果方面。
ARC goes beyond technical metrics, capturing how spaces are experienced in real conditions. With over 250 users, the results highlight strong satisfaction, particularly in air quality, lighting, cleanliness, and acoustics.

透過將使用者感知與績效數據結合，Urban Practice 持續引領 ARC 的實施，將洞察轉化為行動，打造更有效率、以人為本的環境。
By integrating user perception with performance data, Urban Practice continues to lead the implementation of ARC, turning insight into action and shaping better-performing, people-centred environments.

Urban Practice is leading the implementation of the ARC Sustainability Performance Assessment at the USJ - University of Saint Joseph, establishing a structured, long-term framework to understand and enhance campus performance through measurable data.
ARC 由綠色商業認證公司 (Green Business Certification Inc.) 和美國綠色建築委員會 (U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)) 共同開發，是一個數據驅動型平台，能夠評估建築物在能源、水資源、廢物處理、交通出行和人性化體驗等方面的實際績效，並將復雜的營運數據轉化為清晰、可比較的數據洞察。
Developed by the Green Business Certification Inc. and U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), ARC is a data-driven platform that evaluates how buildings actually perform over time, across energy, water, waste, mobility, and human experience, turning complex operational data into clear, comparable insights.

Urban Practice 主持建築師蘇偉圖 ( Nuno Soares ）與六個協會的領導一同前往香港，參與「非常規水資源考察交流活動 2026」」，並參觀了食水處理、再生水及海水化淡設施，為澳門邁向整合式再生水基礎建設的重要轉型提供專業交流與洞見。
此次行程匯聚了六個協會的代表——由澳門建造業發展關注組所組成，包括：
澳門建築師協會、澳門工程師學會、澳門建築置業商會、澳門建造商會、澳門機電工程師學會及澳門建築機械工程商會。
Urban Practice Principal Architect Nuno Soares participated in the “Water Resources Survey and Exchange Activity 2026” in Hong Kong with the leaders of the six associations and visited water treatment, greywater, and desalination plants, as Macau advances its transition towards integrated recycled-water infrastructure.
The programme brought together representatives from the six associations – the Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group, which includes the AAM, the AEM, the MABCD, the MCA, the AECEM, and the APMCCM.
Nuno Soares serves as Vice President of the AAM.

恭喜UP首席建築師 Nuno Soares 最新著作《澳門遊屋記 - 尋找牆後的秘密》（Open House Macau – Architecture Beyond Walls）出版。
Nuno Soares長期關注建築遺產，他將建成環境視為文化意義的鮮活檔案，建築在其中不斷被詮釋和重新激活。這種理念貫穿本書對澳門的探索，將建築理解為隨著時間而形成的更廣闊的城市敘事的一部分。
本書以研究和實地考察為基礎，匯集了東亞首辦的澳門遊屋記活動的資料，該活動向數千名參觀者開放了50座建築。本書揭示了首屆澳門遊屋記的影響和澳門的建築遺產，並探討了人們如何以更直接、更易於理解的方式體驗建築。

Congratulations to UP Principal Architect Nuno Soares on his most recent publication, “Open House Macau – Architecture Beyond Walls”.
With a sustained focus on architectural heritage, Nuno Soares approaches the built environment as a living archive of cultural meaning, where architecture is continuously interpreted and reactivated. This approach shapes how Macau is explored in this publication, in which buildings are understood as part of a wider urban narrative that unfolds over time.
The book is based on research and field experience, bringing together documentation of the first Open House in East Asia, which opened 50 buildings to thousands of visitors. It reveals the impact of Open House Macau's first edition and its architectural heritage, while reflecting on how people can experience architecture in a more direct and accessible way.
The book is available at Ponte 9 – Creative Platform and selected bookstores across Macau.

2026年全球永續建築獎於4月15日在伊斯坦堡舉行的「建築即變革 (Architecture Is Transformation) 」研討會上揭曉。Nuno Soares 擔任本次研討會的評委，參與評選那些在全球範圍內推動環境和社會影響的建築師。

今年的獲獎者包括——Ye Man, Doan Thanh Ha, Loreta Castro Reguera & José Pablo Ambrosi, Amelia Tavella, 和 Andreas Kipar ，他們的作品體現了建築作為變革驅動力的多元化理念。

該獎項由Jana Revedin於2006年在聯合國教科文組織的支持下設立，一直以來都致力於表彰那些具有前瞻性思維、塑造更具韌性、包容性和資源節約型建築環境的實踐，其獲獎者往往能夠獲得全球認可，包括普利茲克建築獎的獲得者。
The 2026 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture was announced on April 15 in Istanbul, during the symposium “Architecture Is Transformation”, in which Nuno Soares served as jury, contributing to the selection of architects advancing environmental and social impact on a global scale.

This year’s laureates - Ye Man, Doan Thanh Ha, Loreta Castro Reguera & José Pablo Ambrosi, Amelia Tavella, and Andreas Kipar - reflect diverse approaches to architecture as a driver of transformation.

Established in 2006 by Jana Revedin under the patronage of UNESCO, the award has consistently highlighted forward-thinking practices shaping a more resilient, inclusive, and resource-conscious built environment, often anticipating global recognition, including recipients of the Pritzker Architecture Prize.

From concept to construction: implementing a lighting system

Responding to the cathedral’s large scale and its UNESCO-listed status, Urban Practice adopted an ‘invisible lighting’ concept, highlighting architectural details and enhancing the sense of space.
Through a sustainable, low-impact approach, custom fixtures were designed in close collaboration with the manufacturer to remain unseen, revealing the interior without compromising its historical integrity.

As the Catholic Diocese of Macau celebrates its 450th anniversary, Urban Practice congratulates the Diocese on this milestone and the inauguration of the new pipe organ at the Cathedral.

The Urban Practice’s lighting design for the Cathedral, completed in 2021, anticipated the future organ as part of its spatial composition. Guided by an “invisible lighting” design and committed to a sustainable approach, the strategy highlights key architectural and liturgical elements, allowing the organ to integrate seamlessly into the Cathedral’s contemplative atmosphere.

Urban Practice's Macau Cathedral Lighting Design project won, in 2023, the Nomination Award in the Interior Lighting Design Category at the Architecture Madrid Awards.

Urban Practice Principal Architect Nuno Soares attended the HKIUD Urban Design Conference as a guest of honour, an event organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design (HKIUD).
The conference set the stage for a timely reflection on the role of urban design in fostering well-being, resilience, and collective happiness in the Greater Bay Area, particularly in Hong Kong.
The event opened with remarks from Mr Benny Chan, President of the HKIUD. It was honoured by the presence of Ms Winnie Ho, Secretary for Housing of the HKSAR Government, who attended as Guest of Honour and keynote speaker.

Urban Practice Principal Architect Nuno Soares will join the jury of the 2026 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture on April 14 as a UIA juror. Marking its 20th edition under the theme "Architecture is Equity", the jury also includes Wang Shu, who was first recognized by this award years before achieving worldwide acclaim with the Pritzker Architecture Prize.

Founded in 2006 by architect and scholar Jana Revedin, the Global Award has gained considerable international recognition and has conducted ongoing, rigorous research, mapping the global architectural and design landscape to pursue environmentally conscious, resilient, and inclusive innovations that leverage local resources.

The Global Award Symposium is placed under UNESCO's patronage, and it’s endorsed by the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) since 2024.
