CUHK RESEARCH SEMINARS: Image Archives and Building Histories

Recent years have seen a surge of publications and exhibitions rethinking Hong Kong’s postwar architecture. Moving beyond approaches that treat buildings as isolated objects, these projects link as-built work with unbuilt proposals and other documentary materials, opening multiple readings and new perspectives on the city’s architectural and urban past.

This seminar brings together four architectural scholars to discuss new practices in curation, documentation and publication, and to consider how critical engagement with the archive can reshape public understanding and scholarly discourse on modern architecture in Hong Kong and beyond.

Infrastructural Urbanism: Agendas for an Opportunistic Planning

Location: THE CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG

Date: 26-Feb-2026 (Thursday - 1:30PM)

Dr. Rui Leão’s lecture examines how infrastructure and public space can be reimagined as catalysts for adaptive urban growth. Drawing from Layering the City, he highlights opportunistic planning strategies that embrace un‑purposed spaces, intertwining public and private realms. His approach positions designers as agents of innovation, fostering resilient, inclusive, and context‑sensitive urbanism in dense environments.

LBA & ActarBooks’ inaugural launch of LAYERING THE CITY took place at Venice University during the opening days of the Venice Bienale at the IUAV Ca Tron campus. On the book:

Through expanded design strategies in post hand over Macau and the research of infrastructure design and public space within dense environments, LBA defined un-purposed space as a mechanism to intertwine private and public spaces while setting up a model of opportunistic urbanism where designers become agents of innovative procurement strategies.

Working beyond the strict realm of design and the commissioned briefs, LBA discovered that architects could sometimes become agents of change, negotiators or policy-makers, thus changing both the culture of commissioning projects and the spatial propositions for the future city by adding new layers of community interaction and cultural use to the overall design. It is a labor of generosity that is at the core of the architectural agenda, when we architects are able to address the client's desires and add our own agendas in response to inherent urban issues to fulfill our true civic responsibility.
