Cannabis Germination Process and Seedling Stage Overview
1. Cannabis Germination Process
Germination is the initial phase where the cannabis seed breaks open, and a seedling begins to emerge. This stage sets the foundation for healthy plant development, and it requires proper environmental conditions.
Steps for Germination:
Soaking the Seeds: Cannabis seeds should be soaked in water (preferably distilled) for 12-24 hours until they sink. This softens the shell, encouraging the seed to sprout.
Placing the Seeds in a Growing Medium: Once the seed cracks and the taproot appears, it’s time to place it about 0.5-1 inch deep into your chosen growing medium (soil, rockwool, coco coir, etc.).
Maintaining Optimal Moisture: The medium should remain moist but not soaked. It’s essential to avoid overwatering during this stage.
Temperature and Humidity: Ideal temperatures range from 70-85°F (21-29°C), and humidity should be around 70-80%. This mimics spring conditions, which is when cannabis naturally begins to germinate.
What You Need:
Healthy cannabis seeds: Choose seeds that are mature, typically dark brown or gray with stripes, and firm to the touch.
Moisture: Water is crucial to trigger germination. You can germinate seeds using the paper towel method or by planting them directly in the medium.
Warmth: Seeds germinate best in temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C).
Oxygen: Ensure the growing medium is airy and not too compact, as roots need oxygen to grow.
2. Light Intensity for Germination
During the germination phase, cannabis seeds don’t need light. However, once the seedling emerges and the first set of leaves (cotyledons) appears, light becomes crucial.
For Seedlings:
Use low-intensity lights (like fluorescent lights or LEDs) positioned about 4-6 inches above the seedlings.
Light should be provided for 18-24 hours per day during this stage.
Keep the intensity moderate (around 300-400 PPFD or micromoles/m²/s) to prevent stretching and ensure the plant develops strong stems.
3. Nutrition During the Germination and Seedling Stage
During the germination phase and the initial seedling stage, cannabis plants don’t require much external nutrition because the seed itself contains enough stored energy to grow the first few leaves. However, as the seedling develops, light feeding becomes necessary.
Seedling Stage Nutrition:
Watering: Use plain water with a pH between 5.8-6.5, depending on your medium. Overwatering can easily drown the delicate roots.
Fertilization: For the first 1-2 weeks, avoid feeding any strong nutrients. Once the first set of true leaves (not the cotyledons) appears, you can begin providing mild nutrients.
Nutrient Mix: A gentle mix of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) at ¼ to ½ strength of normal feeding should be enough. The nutrient solution should have higher nitrogen content for early vegetative growth.
4. How Long is the Seedling Stage?
The seedling stage lasts from the time the seed sprouts until the plant develops 3-4 sets of true leaves. This period typically lasts about 2-3 weeks but may extend based on environmental factors such as light intensity, temperature, and humidity.
5. What to Expect During the Seedling Stage
Emergence of Cotyledons: The first small, round leaves (cotyledons) appear shortly after germination. These provide energy to the seedling until the first true leaves form.
True Leaves Appear: After a few days, the plant will produce its first set of serrated, "finger-like" leaves. The number of "fingers" on the leaves will increase as the plant matures.
Strong, Compact Growth: Seedlings should have short, sturdy stems. If your seedling is stretching and becoming tall and thin, it means the light is too weak or too far away.
Root Development: During this phase, the plant is focusing heavily on building its root system, which is why keeping the moisture balance in the growing medium is so crucial.
Healthy Color: A healthy seedling should be a vibrant green. Any yellowing, drooping, or wilting indicates an issue (such as nutrient deficiency, overwatering, or too much light).
Key Points to Remember:
The germination process can take between 1-7 days.
Seedlings don’t require intense light and should be exposed to light for 18-24 hours a day.
Nutrients should be kept at low concentrations until the plant moves into the vegetative stage.
The seedling stage lasts for about 2-3 weeks, at which point the plant transitions into full vegetative growth.
During this time, focus on maintaining optimal moisture, light intensity, and nutrition to ensure your plants develop into strong, healthy cannabis plants.
