On this occasion to commemorate the Indian indentured laborers in Mauritius, I am sharing my ancestor, the very first person from my family who came here to work in the sugar industry.
So, here is the very first person from my father's side of my family who came in Mauritius from India in 1874. Immigrant number 375923, who took the ship, "Glenroy" from Calcutta port at the age of 30. My ancestor lived in the zillah of Jounpore and in the village of Perchanpore. By the way, zillah is like a district. This term was used in British India period, until they changed after their independence.
My ancestor worked for Eugene Leclezio's sugar mill, which was known as Mapou Leclezio. The chimney is still there. It is located just behind of Mapou Leclezio Kalimaye, at the entrance of Goodlands village.
My ancestor died on 1902. The village he came from does not exist anymore. India changed after their independence. Most villages, towns and districts have been renamed or disappeared or transformed to something else.
