Have you ever wondered why a supposedly pure guppy strain suddenly produces fry with completely different colors? One possible reason is an accidental crossbreeding. If a female guppy was previously kept with a different male, she may have stored s***m from that male and later used it to fertilize her eggs—even after being moved to a pure strain tank. As a result, some of her fry can inherit different color patterns or traits from the other male. This is why unexpected colors in guppy fry can be a fascinating clue that your “pure” line may actually carry hidden genetics from an accidental cross.

Or simply, the pair is not a purebreed one 😉

Hermaphrodite or Just Late Bloomer?

You wait patiently for your swordtails to breed, watching day after day, expecting the female to eventually give you a batch of fry. But after a whole month, something strange happens—the “female” starts developing a gonopodium, the reproductive organ normally seen in male livebearers. Suddenly, your breeding pair isn’t a pair anymore… you’ve got two males!

So instead of getting a new generation of swordtails, you end up staring at two handsome males wondering, “Wait… where did my female go?”. the question is , is this considered hermaphrodite or just late bloomer?🧐

*Why It Looks Like a S*x Change* ?

Late Maturation:

Swordtails have early-maturing males and late-maturing males. Late-maturing males grow slowly and look just like females for a long time.

Dominance Suppression:

A dominant male in a tank can stop smaller or younger males from showing male traits.

Appearance Shift:

Once the dominant male is removed or dies, the hidden male quickly grows his "sword" and pelvic gonopodium, giving the false impression of a s*x change.

Internal Biology:

Scientific checks of internal organs show that true females cannot turn into fertile males; they keep female organ structures.
