Drawing on extensive field observations, interviews, and illustrations, the talk reflects on 50 years of Maldivian resort architecture and its role in shaping the nation’s built environment, global perceptions of the Maldives, and the ways in which place, identity, and belonging have come to be imagined.

ދިވެހީންގެ ފަރުުމާތައް އުފެއްދުމުގައި، ހަލާކުވެފައިވާ މޫދުގެ ގުދުރަތީ ނިޒާމުތައް އަލުން އިޔާދަކޮށް، ފަހި މާދަމަޔަކައް މިސްރާބު ޖެހުން މީ ހާސިލް ކުރަންވީ ލަނޑުދަންޑި އެކެވެ.

It is shade, habitat, memory, and a vital part of island life. As development expands, we must ask what is gained, and what is lost.

One Size Fits None!

Sustainable housing in Villingili must move beyond fixed, standardised units and respond to different household needs, family structures, income levels, and ways of living.

AAM calls for housing that is flexible, community-centred, and designed through co-design, where the built environment serves people rather than forcing people to adapt to it.

“Tree Places” — Pattern 171 from A Pattern Language reminds us that trees are not obstacles to development, but foundations for living environments.

When planning a site, spaces can be arranged to coexist with existing trees rather than replace them. Around them, shaded commons emerge naturally, communities gather, children play, and pathways form through comfort rather than rigid planning.

AAM advocates for development that works with the existing ecological and social fabric of the site — preserving its microclimate, shade, and communal life while imagining more sustainable ways of living together.
