A native to tropical and southern Africa.

Horn-pod tree is a shrub or small tree with very sweet-scented flowers.

MEDICINAL
A decoction of the root bark is used to treat indigestion, diarrhoea, fever, snakebites, infertility and venereal diseases.

A decoction of the root is used to treat a variety of complaints including chronic cough, pneumonia and pulmonary tuberculosis; re**al prolapse; diabetes; testicle inflammation; and to facilitate giving birth.

Combined with salt, it is used to treat cough.

The root powder is taken with food to treat anorexia and is added to porridge in order to treat pain in the digestive tract.

The body is washed with an infusion of the root to treat measles.

A leaf infusion is used to treat headache and stomach problems.

The latex is smeared on cuts to heal them.

Traditionally, it is believed to stimulate milk flow in nursing mothers, a few drops of the latex being sprinkled over the breasts.

OTHER USES
A fibre obtained from the bark is used for weaving.

A latex obtained from injuries to the plant is used to repair bicycle tyres.

The Latex is also used as glue to stick feathers and metal tips to arrows.

The latex is also smeared on hides of drums to improve the tone.

The wood is suitable for ornaments, furniture, fencing.

A native of East and Southern Africa, Cassia abbreviata is a tropical tree species in the genus Cassia.

Traditionally considered as one of the most important traditional medicine plants.

MEDICINE
The smoke of smouldering twigs is inhaled to cure headache.

The powdered stem bark is applied to abscesses and added to food to cure diarrhoea. A decoction of the stem bark is used as a purgative and to cure malaria and diarrhoea.

A decoction, or the dried powdered roots in water, is drunk as a treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, stomach-ache, bilharzia, venereal diseases, pneumonia, uterus complaints, heavy menstruation and snakebites.

Malaria (including blackwater fever) is also treated with extracts from the roots.

A root infusion is kept in the mouth, or the roots are chewed and swallowed, in order to relieve toothache.

OTHER USES
The stem bark is used for tanning and dyeing.

The smell of the crushed leaves is said to drive snakes from their holes.

The wood is termite resistant and therefore the poles are preferred for house construction.

It is occasionally consumed as a leaf vegetable, and occasionally fed to rabbits and pigs in East Africa.

In other Sub-Saharan cultures, like The Ndebele, use a decoction of the roots in the treatment of venereal diseases and as a medicine for women suffering unduly during the menstrual period. Flacourtia indica is a species of flowering plant native to much of Africa and tropical and temperate parts of Asia.

It has various uses, including folk medicine, fuel, animal food and human food.

A native to Central and Southern Africa.

The seeds of this plant are considered a delicacy in Botswana, where they are used as nuts. Ground and roasted seeds are often used for coffee. The unripe seeds are not harmful to humans and can be eaten. Botswanans also use the plants seeds for oil.

In Congo the bark is used for rope making, while the roots are used to make dye. The plant is harvested by livestock. Its growing as a decorative plant in countries like South Africa, Zimbabwe, and even in the United States.

In Zimbabwe the Shona tribe uses the plants roots for medical reasons, such as for treating dysmenorrhoea and female infertility. Ocurs in the highlands of eastern Africa, from northern Malawi to Ethiopia and Somalia

Berberis holstii is used as firewood, for making hedges, and cut branches are reported to be useful in the construction of barriers that are difficult for rodents to pass.

It is also used in traditional medicine against a host of ailments, including coughing, pneumonia, malaria, stomach ache, and STDs, as an infusion of the root.

One study found that alkaloid extracts of the roots showed significant activity against a strain of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum.
