John Robshaw Textiles

John Robshaw Textiles Block printed textiles from India including bedding, furniture, tabletop, gifts & accessories, vintage, and more.

After earning a fine arts degree at Pratt and studying traditional block printing in China, John Robshaw journeyed to India to find natural indigo dye for his paintings. Instead, he fell in love with the fabric-making traditions of the local artisans. The hands-on immediacy and vitality of textiles piqued what was to become a lifelong fascination.

Here’s a closer look at how the best selling Farah Light Indigo Pillow comes together: every flower is built slowly, one color at at a time using a series of hand carved wooden blocks that are pressed into the fabric with skill, intention and a lot of human touch.

Birthdays have a way of sharpening what matters. From chasing carved naga pieces in the summer heat in Jodhpur, moonlit dinners in the ruins in Merida and days spent weaving in and out of stacks of rugs in Morocco with Rachel and Regina, this year was good to me. Thank you for another play-filled trip around the sun.

Last year, I made these one-of-a-kind blazers from vintage ralli blankets and textiles I sourced in Jaipur. They are my favorite way to weave a little bit of India into my day, and right now they’re on sale for 50% off. Grab yours before they’re gone!

I’ve been travelling to India for over twenty five years, working alongside block printers, learning from them, building with them. In all that time, I’ve met very few women doing this work. Then I met Anita. She came to the craft through her husband and was hesitant at first, but (like me) she fell in love with the skill and precision block printing demands. She works in an industry that has long belonged to men, and she has little patience for the idea that it should stay that way. “I feel that every woman should be able to stand on her own feet,” she told me. “There should be no fear. What matters is that the work is beautiful.” After twenty five years in the world of block printing, and Anita reminds me that this time-honored craft is still evolving and changing for the better. Happy International Women’s Day.
