An artificial topography transforms the monument from an object of remembrance into a public landscape—creating spaces for gathering, recreation, and reflection where history and everyday life intersect.

Concebido como una reinterpretación del monumento tradicional, el proyecto propone un espacio público para ser recorrido, habitado y compartido. A partir de una topografía artificial, se integran un parque elevado, un anfiteatro, una galería de usos múltiples y áreas de convivencia que fortalecen el vínculo entre la memoria histórica y la vida cotidiana.

La arquitectura adquiere su mayor valor cuando es apropiada por quienes la habitan.

Fabrications, MoMA, New York, 1998

Fabrications featured sixteen full-scale architectural installations by leading architects and design teams, each exploring broad questions in contemporary architecture.

Presented across four institutions—the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Wexner Center for the Arts, and the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona—the exhibition offered an alternative to the conventional display of architecture through models and drawings, inviting visitors to experience architecture at full scale while engaging with ideas about construction, materiality, and the making of space.

For the exhibition, TEN Arquitectos designed a glass-and-steel intervention for with .

By lifting sections of the marble paving, the project revealed traces of the townhouses that once occupied the site, evoking an archaeological excavation and establishing a dialogue between memory and the present.

The installation also paid tribute to Auguste Rodin’s Honoré de Balzac. Excerpts from Rainer Maria Rilke’s essay on the sculpture were printed on the glass, becoming legible from the seating below and weaving together architecture, literature, history, and place.

"In the intentions of Mexico's TEN Arquitectos, led by Enrique Norten, the library of the future is a different kind of animal".

In 2003, TEN Arquitectos was shortlisted—alongside Moshe Safdie, Norman Foster, and Cesar Pelli—for the expansion of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Rather than treating the addition as an extension of the existing neoclassical building, the proposal reimagined the library as a civic platform for the 21st century. A monumental inverted L-shaped structure embraced the historic library, creating a new public plaza beneath it—a “living room for the city” where culture, learning, and public life could intersect.

The project proposed a continuous relationship between old and new, combining traditional library spaces with exhibition galleries, performance venues, media facilities, gardens, cafés, and flexible public spaces within a single urban framework.

One York, Tribeca NY
2004-2008

Located in the heart of Tribeca, 1 York transforms two 19th-century buildings through a glass and steel insertion that links the existing structures. The project explores the relationship between existing architecture and contemporary intervention, creating new spaces while maintaining the identity of the original buildings.

Ubicado en el corazón de Tribeca, 1 York transforma dos edificios del siglo XIX mediante una inserción de vidrio y acero que vincula las estructuras existentes, explorando la relación entre la arquitectura preexistente y una intervención contemporánea, creando nuevos espacios sin perder la identidad de los edificios originales.
