Caption from the architect: Unique, thoughtful details come together to create a soaring, open feeling that makes the relatively small footprint of Granny Pad feel much larger.

From the curator: Detached accessory dwelling units (DADU’s) represent an important ‘missing middle’ housing option, offering young families access to good schools (often located in otherwise unaffordable neighborhoods) and allow for increased density with minimal impact to the physical character of the neighborhood. They utilize existing infrastructure, so minimize environmental impacts, and offer homeowners a way to age in place by providing additional income. Granny Pad exemplifies the promise of this building typology.

The floor plan of Casa Cosecha De Lluvia is well modulated to blur the lines between interior and exterior space, allowing the landscape in and the interior function out onto the porches. A drawing of the plan well illustrates this duality.

The roof monitors on Casa Cosecha De Lluvia bath the interior spaces in a soft glow, in contrast to the intense Mexican sun. An everchanging rhythm of light and dark, sun and shadow, is cast down from above as the sun moves from east to west. The result is an enlivened interior that possesses a mood and character well beyond what one would expect from such an elemental structure.

Our first NW Featured Home for Q1.22 is CASA COSECHA DE LLUVIA, by &
Located in Temascaltepec, Mexico, this ensemble of small structures exemplifies the essential quality that LIGHT plays in the creation of great residential architecture. Consisting of a 1200 SF main residence, a detached art studio and a bathhouse, this modest retreat makes a big impression on a wild landscape. Three large roof monitors allow filtered light from the south, east and west deep into the interior. Wide overhangs shield the indoor and outdoor living spaces from the intense summer sun. These relatively simple gestures are handled with great artistry, enlivening the interiors and offering a spatial dynamic that is as unexpected, enriching the experience of home.
