Leicester Typha R&D Center | Sidney Luke Chin Wen Jian

🎓 SABE Alumni Spotlight:
From UCSI University to the United Kingdom, we’re proud to celebrate the journey of SABE alumnus, who graduated from the Bachelor of Architecture programme at UCSI in 2022 before pursuing a Master of Architecture (RIBA Part II) at University of Leicester.

His master’s project, Leicester Typha R&D Center, explores a new approach to flood resilience by transforming a flood-prone site at the confluence of the River Soar and Grand Union Canal into a thriving wetland landscape.

By integrating Typha (cattail) planting, ecological restoration, research facilities, and community learning spaces, the proposal demonstrates how architecture can work with natural systems to create more resilient and sustainable urban environments.

A wonderful example of how design can address environmental challenges while reconnecting people, place, and nature. 🌿💧

Congratulations on your achievements, and we look forward to seeing where your architectural journey takes you next.

Are you our SABE alumnus? Share your works with us and inspire the new generation of designers upcoming. Link in bio ✨

Mix-media exploded axonometric by Ng Yue Foong

About the work from Diploma in Architecture, Year 1 Design Studio 1 (2024-05):

Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino is a poetic and philosophical novel where explorer Marco Polo describes imaginary cities to Emperor Kublai Khan. Each city reflects human emotions, memory, desire, time, and urban life. Through surreal narratives, the book questions how cities shape identity, imagination, and the meaning of civilization.

In Sophronia, permanence dissolves into illusion, where joy and emptiness exchange masks without warning. Desire arrives briefly, then disappears before meaning can settle. The city exists as a rhythm of longing and departure, revealing how human life clings to fleeting spectacles while mistaking transience for stability, and movement for belonging.

Studio led by Sukhjit Sidhu and Muhammad Munzir

What makes a space feel inviting, dramatic, or comfortable? Sometimes, it all comes down to lighting.

On 21 May 2026, Semester 3 Architecture students visited Lightcraft KL as part of the Building Science course led by Ts. Chan Chiew Chuen. Known for their expertise in architectural lighting design and solutions, the Lightcraft team shared valuable insights into how artificial lighting shapes spatial experience, mood, and functionality.

The session bridged classroom learning with industry practice, giving students a deeper appreciation of light as an essential design element. Special thanks to James Lim (HoD, Architecture), for facilitating the visit.
