The architecture of the Dry Kitchen is really centred around two ideas: a double volume space and clerestory window to guide the morning ☀️ into the space, which gives gentle warmth into the wood and stone interiors in the 16PJ Reunion Farmhouse.

One of the key architectural principles adopted in the 16PJ Reunion Farmhouse was to respect the existing building and the neighbouring scale so that it harmonises with its surroundings. The architectural language was to pay homage to the nostalgic elements of a typical Petaling Jaya suburb-home.

One of the most fundamental consideration in architecture is to design for natural daylight. The 16PJ Farmhouse is a deep floor plan barricaded by a neighbouring party wall. Hence, it was a deliberate strategy to allow for a skylight above the Living Room, which is situated in the middle of the floor plan, so that it could bring daylight in and reduce the need for artificial lighting.

The Clerestory Window in 16PJ Reunion Farmhouse designed to capture the morning daylight filtering into the newly extended double-volume pitched Dry Kitchen and onto the bar top, offering a dialogue between the House and the Sky. In a chapel-like manner, the natural light coming through the window casts unique shadows at different times of the day.

Situated in a leafy, matured Petaling Jaya neighbourhood, the 16PJ Reunion Farmhouse pays homage to its existing 1950s architectural expressions, refreshed and refurbished into a modern house with clean lines and generous openings to capture the surrounding views of the nearby hills and forests.

It has been a year since the completion of the Respite House. Just looking back and recollecting all the work and thought processes put together by and I to frame the vistas of the interior spaces with arches which help soften and add character between the transition of spaces.

Of course none of this would have happened without the support and drive by an amazing Client in who has committed to realise a vision to show that a sanctuary can be created with an existing single storey terrace house. What an incredible journey it has been 🙌
