Cloud City was a cardboard city installation and co-creation workshop that invited children to imagine, build, and take part in the making of a shared urban environment. The overall installation and workshop were co-led by Tay Tze Yong and Prof. Eric Chen from ArchiBlur Lab, and hosted by the National Tainan Living Arts Center (國立臺南生活美學館) in Tainan City, Taiwan.

Designed not as a fixed object, but as a flexible framework for imagination and participation, the installation was structured around two main intersecting axes. One axis expressed form, mass, and presence, while the other suggested relationship, movement, and exchange. Both reflected the dual nature of urban life, a city made not only of physical structures, but also of movement, gathering, and invisible social connections.

The installation grew through the hands and ideas of more than sixty children from Tainan City, guided by university students from CYCU. Through given playful themes such as Walking House, Floating House, Bridge House, Cantilever House, Mountain House, and Plug-in House, the children explored new possibilities of living and city-making.

Built over two days, Cloud City transformed simple cardboard into a temporary city of ideas, a shared imagination of how future cities can be more adaptable, connected, and collaborative.

This will be our upcoming art installation at the Taoyuan Land Art Festival, as part of our continuing pursuit of art and urban installations.

Inspired by the shoreline, the work reflects on an in-between space, where land meets water, presence meets absence, and distance begins to dissolve. It imagines a third space that is fluid, ambiguous, and open to interpretation, inviting visitors to see boundaries not as divisions, but as places of possibility, connection, and imagination.
