Throwback to one of SE BULAN DESIGN’s earliest works (2017).

Set on a piece of land in Sungkai, this project began with a client’s clear vision: a retreat lodge experience close to nature. The site already featured a fish pond, and the brief expanded to include an animal farm, creating a slow-living retreat for guests.

Existing mature trees were preserved, and the chalet units were carefully positioned around them. For the overall masterplan, we proposed three chalet units with a typical layout, allowing the architecture to sit lightly within the landscape.

Unfortunately, the project did not move forward. Still, it remains a meaningful early work for us, where we explored our approach to designing with nature, keeping things simple, and being clear with the intent of the space.

We proposed a two-level lodge raised on a platform, suitable for a small family. A verandah-style entrance leads into a double-volume space with an open-plan living and kitchen. Dining was placed at the rear verandah, directly connected to the kitchen and oriented towards the animal farm. The wardrobe and bathroom sit on the ground floor, with the shower offering an optional outdoor bathing experience. Above, a loft-style upper floor accommodates two queen mattresses, keeping the space simple and flexible.

This was the first exhibition we encountered upon entering. The noise and heat from the inverted air-conditioning units made us physically experience the hidden costs of climate control, the irony turning interior comfort into something we could feel outside. The shallow pool reflects future sea-level projections shaped by our own actions and shared responsibility.

We had a chance to visit Venice Architecture Biennale with the theme Intelligens, which looks at intelligence as something shared between nature, technology, and people. The exhibits span climate and sustainability, AI collaborations, and even space-related ideas exploring how mankind should adapt the change now, while bridging the natural and the artificial.

What made it even more exciting was Venice itself; with exhibitions spread across the promenade, gardens, and shipyards, it’s amazing to see how the city doesn’t just act as a backdrop, but merges with its historic wonders to become part of the Biennale.

This end-lot family home interior was designed to feel warm and livable, supporting an elderly parent while remaining inviting for frequent family gatherings.

Open living and dining spaces allow for easy movement and comfortable get-togethers. Externally, a pocket garden is proposed beside the dining area and master bedroom, serving as a dedicated guest entrance and introducing greenery into the interior.

The design approach stays simple and modern, using soft tones and light wood finishes to create a calm, cosy home. 🤍

This project in Galeri Sasha, a contemporary art gallery, involved complete transformation of a former bar into a gallery space, for art curation and gathering, including a viewing room and small office for administrative work.

Previously characterized by all black interior with black walls and dark finishes, the commercial unit was transformed into a bright all white, minimalist setup which designed to create a neutral backdrop, clean and refined environment that emphasizes the artwork. Elements like polished concrete floors and effects of exposed concrete beams, showcases raw materials that reflects a modern and industrial aesthetic.

A subtle vertical slit was introduced to the front facade to allow hint of natural light filter into the gallery space throughout the day. In addition to a standard spotlight track lighting projected to the exhibitions, few rectangular ceiling light was integrated for a widespread illumination across the space, and also to provide flexibility of various lighting ambience and curatorial needs.

Yayasan Chow Kit, 2024 //

One Stop Children’s Centre under Yayasan Chow Kit is a 22,000 sqft, four-storey facility designed to provide a comprehensive and nurturing environment for children. Housing the Pusat Aktiviti Kanak-Kanak (PAKK), a multipurpose hall, KL Krashpad (KLKP), and an urban farm rooftop, this centre consolidates essential services in a single, safe location, significantly reducing operational costs.

With expansive play areas and spacious classrooms, it fosters comfortable and engaging learning experiences. The thoughtful design facilitates easy access to resources, while the open-air environment promotes healthy developmental programs, ensuring children thrive in a supportive and stimulating setting.

Interior design visualization for Setia Eco Glades, Cyberjaya.

A unit with limited space requires a minimal design that maximizes functionality and comfort. The design should emphasize ample natural light, creating an open and airy feel. Key elements include clean lines, neutral colors, and a few strategic focal points to add visual interest without clutter. Hidden lighting enhances the ambiance, providing a subtle and elegant illumination.

For a family home, the minimalism is balanced with cozy touches to ensure a warm and inviting atmosphere. Soft textiles, comfortable seating, and warm wood accents contribute to a sense of comfort and relaxation. The overall style is minimal yet inviting, creating a space that is both functional and perfect for lounging and family activities.

Accessible bedroom for independent living //
In progress, 2024.

Accessibility in the bedroom is crucial to promote independent living, especially for individuals with mobility challenges or disabilities. Prioritizing accessibility in bedroom design fosters a sense of independence and enhances the quality of life for all occupants.

Client requested to renovate the existing living hall in their bungalow house and convert it into an accessible bedroom. The client’s requirement is to make the room her safe space with features similar to a studio apartment unit.

It has a built-in island bed design incorporated with a functional bed head, an accessible wardrobe with sufficient width for wheelchair turning radius, an open toilet concept positioned close to the bed and pantry area, an accessible pantry and fridge, and a husband’s working zone. There is also a spacious TV area complete with a sofa.

The priority is given to ensure that critical zoning and pathways are accessible for wheelchair turning movements.

This project features a wider door size that open outwards, and switches at an accessible height of 1000mm.

We also encourage the client to use smart switch devices that can connect with apps and remote controls to minimize travel. Hand rails, horizontal and vertical grab bars are installed for ease of movement and to minimize chances for accidents to occur.
