Many people make a critical mistake daily on construction sites, unaware of the significant error. My mission is to establish facts and prevent costly blunders in real-world construction practices.

We know that soil compaction occurs over years, settling into distinct layers. When excess excavation occurs, codes specify using weak concrete (mix ratio 1:4:8) to rectify the issue.

However, many individuals, due to ignorance or lack of practical knowledge, fail to follow this guideline. Some might instruct workers to compact soil manually, but this method falls short of achieving maximum compaction.

Inadequate soil compaction leads to settlement under load, causing cracks and structural damage. This issue worsens on pad footings, where direct point loads are expected.

Next time you make an excavation mistake, consider these three corrective measures:

1. Maintain level and balance during concrete work.
2. Use weak concrete (mix ratio 1:4:8 or 1:3:6) to balance out the error.

3. Employ a compacting machine to compact soil in 50-100mm layers under wet conditions for maximum compaction.
