It was June 2015...Β
The work had progressedΒ for 4 monthsΒ and all we knew was site, home and church. It was wild and hectic was an understatement.Β
We had over 100 labourers to manage and everyday we had to ensure that we engage as many as possible. Depending on the operation, the number of labourers to engage differ.Β
The community is an agriculturalΒ one but it has started developing with a Federal University already running.Β
Seeing that there was time for the project to elapse, I considered farming. Engaged one of my labourers, caused myself to trust him to handle things while I focus on my primaryΒ assignment there.Β
Harvest came and I got a rude shock. My farm manager/labourer sold all the produce bought for storage with the intention to sell later. All efforts to salvageΒ the situation were unsuccessful.Β EffortsΒ to engage another labour proved unprofitable as they all were dubious and not trustworthy.Β Β
We came out disappointed with lessons.Β
Be a professional when dealing with them. They can be closeΒ but never close enough to forget that you are their employer.Β
Don'tΒ trust them. They are in dire need of money (more than what you pay on site), so they will devour you at any opportunity.Β
Avoid bringingΒ them to where you live. It is their community,Β your safety is important.Β
The projectΒ might take 32 weeks, stick to it. AvoidΒ temptation to start a business because you will have to deal with people you don't know.Β
Never owe your workers. Pay them and let them be happy doing their job with you.Β
