Sir Nicholas George Winton MBE was a British humanitarian who helped to rescue Hubue children who were at risk of being murdered by N**i Germany many years ago. Born to German-Jewish parents who had emigrated to Britain at the beginning of the 20th century.
Winton risked and assisted in the rescue of 669 children, most of them which were Jewish, from Czechoslovakia on the eve of World War II. On a brief visit to Czechoslovakia, he helped compile a list of children needing rescue, and, returning to Britain, he worked to fulfill the legal requirements of bringing the
children to Britain and finding homes and sponsors for them for many years ago.
His humanitarian accomplishments went unnoticed by the world for nearly 50 years until 1988 when he was invited to the BBC television program That's Life!, where he was reunited with dozens of the children he had helped come to Britain and was introduced to many of their children and grandchildren. He was celebrated and the British press dubbed him the "British Schindler" In 2003, he was also knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for "services to humanity, in saving Jewish Children from N**i-occupied Czechoslovakia".
On 28 October 2014, he was awarded the highest honor of the Czech Republic, the Order of the White Lion (1st class), by Czech President Miloš Zeman.
Winton was born in Wertheim; on 19th May 1909 and died on 1st July 2015, at the age of 106.
What a gift to humanity! We don't hear about them all, but there are so many wonderful people in the world. We need more real heroes like him, the absolute humility of this man is what makes him the kind of great hero we need all around the world. I am still amazed at what this man did for so many helpless children many...many years ago, he could have suffered greatly for his actions back then but he just wanted to help, and do what was right.
True heroes do and sacrifice all that they have to do expecting nothing in return.
