In my 10 years of designing spaces, meeting clients, solving problems, making mistakes, and bringing ideas to life, I’ve learned a few things that no classroom could have taught me.
1️⃣ Beautiful spaces start long before furniture arrives.
Most people think interior design begins when it’s time to buy furniture. It doesn’t. The biggest mistakes usually happen during planning, electrical works, lighting, measurements, and space allocation.
2️⃣ Expensive doesn’t always mean beautiful.
I’ve seen people spend a fortune and still end up with average-looking spaces. I’ve also seen modest budgets produce stunning results because the right decisions were made from the beginning.
3️⃣ Lighting can make or break a room.
You can have the finest furniture, beautiful wall finishes, and premium décor, but poor lighting will hide all that beauty. Good lighting is one of the most underrated parts of interior design.
4️⃣ Trends are temporary.
Every year comes with a new trend. What remains timeless is a space that works for your lifestyle, feels comfortable, and reflects your personality.
5️⃣ People remember how a space makes them feel.
Years later, they may not remember the exact paint colour, curtain fabric, or tile pattern. But they’ll remember how peaceful, comfortable, welcoming, and beautiful the space felt.
One thing this profession has taught me is that growth starts with taking the first step.
If you’re thinking about getting into interior design, don’t wait until everything is perfect.
Start somewhere.
It could be decorating your own room.
Helping a friend improve a space.
Learning about colours, lighting, furniture, and finishes.
Before you know it, people will start noticing your work.
The designers, architects, contractors, and business owners you admire today all started from somewhere.
Now I’d like to hear from you.
What’s one lesson your profession, business, or life journey has taught you?
Let’s talk 😁
