With proud we want to present you this colourful collective housing block. Unfortunately we did not win this closed competition. We definitely would have loved to actually build this beauty!
The building has a two-storey plinth with housing, with a substantial tower above it and measures over 50 m. It is part of a bigger development and gives an enormous qualitative impulse to the area.
We want to create a neighborhood which people can make their own and where a sense of collectivity and community resides in and around the building.
The to be developed area is a mix of social and private sector housing in different price ranges, together with large and small-scale offices, studios, sports and catering facilities. Grouped together around a pocket park.
The challenge is to create a residential building on a relatively large scale that has a pleasant and sensitive human scale. We wanted to create soft plinth with houses, which is connected to the park and waterfront around it. And we wanted to open up the building from the inside. With minimal means in the facade openings and with larger gestures in precisely chosen places in the building, the building becomes an expression of the inside.
The social housing in the plinth and in the tower all have a good outdoor space and many facade openings with double doors. The entrance is a spacious and at the same time intimate place that connects the bicycle shed, the doctor's office and the neighborhood workshop. With transparency and openness the different users are visible and give identity and color to the building. With minimal means, a grand gesture has been established.
A building not only occupies space but also gives back to its context by giving its residents attention and a place. A building that in its open character contributes to the sense of collectivity of the neighborhood.
