The new skyline of Vlaardingen

Imagine living with a raw industrial, panoramic view on the Nieuwe Maas. This concept is being developed on the former Unilever area in Vlaardingen, where a new residential community is emerging, and we had the privilege of designing one of the residential towers.

This 70 meter high housing tower offers panoramic views of the ‘Nieuwe Maas’ thanks to smart design strategies like tilted floor plans and horizontal windows, ensuring every resident enjoys the same breathtaking view.

Street life is enriched by the public and commercial functions on the ground floor and a unique three-storey urban loggia, promoting community interaction. On the seventh floor, this collective outdoor space provides residents with the opportunity to enjoy views of the Maas river.

From Abattoir to Cultural Hotspot: a little history about Schleuchthaus Hollerich

A little history about the journey of Schleuchthaus Hollerich. Originally a 1930’s abattoir, this historic site has transformed into a vibrant cultural hub.

Once home to studios, a graffiti gallery, and a skate hall, it’s now an open-air museum for street art and culture.

The city plans to preserve this charm by adding a new ‘skin’ around the complex, creating dynamic spaces while protecting the historical buildings.

A large, lightweight roof will turn Schleuchthaus into a public icon, with overhead doors opening to main access roads. This design blends history, culture, and modern innovation.

Stay tuned for the excitement progress on this transformation project!

Schleuchthaus Hollerich: A Hub for Culture and Urban Sports

At Civic Architects, we’re committed to creating spaces that inspire and connect communities. Our latest project in the Hollerich district is a good example.

We’re preserving the historic Abattoir’s unique street art and cultural spaces while enhancing its functionality with a new protective ‘skin’. This innovative approach minimizes environmental impact and maintains the site’s original charm.

Plus, we’re excited to support the city’s communal initiatives with Urban Sports facilities like a skatehall, climbing gym, parcours-tracks and bmx areas! These activities invite people with all sorts of backgrounds to join, try and have fun, to adapt a healthy lifestyle and at the same time develop a creative mindset for cultural and individual expression and collaborations, for young and old. These facilities provide an accessible way to get to know the other cultural facilities which the sites provide, like the dancing studios and street art galleries, also for people without a cultural background or related education.

Follow us for more updates on how Schleuchthaus Hollerich is becoming a beacon of contemporary urban renewal!

The Cube and its ‘flexible design’

The world is changing all the time and society is evolving fast due to technological change. The heart of this change in the Netherlands can be found at the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente in Enschede.

Change means flexibility. With its flexible design, The Cube can adapt to the changing demands of the curriculum, making it a future-proof space. This historical photo shows how it was back in the days. The new open-plan workshop, with a stunning view from the sunken floor, and the large windows that invite the outside world in, embody the spirit of transparency and innovation. This building transforms the educational experience by making the technological processes visible and accessible, emphasizing the impact of engineering on our everyday lives.

The Cube - A Beacon for Engineering Innovation at University of Twente

At the University of Twente, the Faculty of Engineering Technology is at the heart of innovation and transformation. The new extension, The Cube, is a game-changer for the campus.

This state-of-the-art facility is more than just a building; it’s a dynamic space where students will meet, collaborate, and conduct groundbreaking research. The Cube bridges the gap between theoretical education and practical application, providing a versatile environment that adapts to the ever-evolving needs of engineering students.

One of the standout features is the sunken metal and welding workshop, visible through large windows, allowing everyone to witness the technical processes. This transparency highlights the importance of hands-on experience in shaping the future of technology. With flexible layouts and high-tech equipment, The Cube is designed to foster innovation and encourage students to push the boundaries of what’s possible in today’s world.

Welcome! Step into “The Cube” 🔬

Introducing “The Cube”- the latest addition to the UT campus in Enschede! This dynamic new workshop building for the Faculty of Engineering and Technology is an embodiment of flexible design.
With wide windows offering views into the sunken workshop, Cube connects seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Inside, students and researchers innovate and create in spaces that adapt to changing needs every semester. The two-story trusses provide open, adaptable spaces for future modifications.

The entrance reveals the heart of the action: a metal and welding workshop, where the magic happens. A sunken floor gives a full view over the machinery, while a pyramid-shaped atrium floods the space with natural light.

Cube is a vibrant showcase for the future of engineering!
