REDscape Landscape & Urbanism

REDscape Landscape & Urbanism What does REDscape do? REDscape is about fulfilling this requirement. What does REDscape design? What does REDscape represent ?

REDscape is a design office for landscape and urbanism, operating in the disciplines of urban planning, regional design and landscape architecture. The physical surroundings that we live in can be seen as a highly dynamic playing field of often conflicting needs and claims, in which the forces of culture, social values and economics are in a constant process of reassessment and change. Within this

field of tension is the requirement to interpret, conceptualise and organise new ideas, programmes and wishes into spatial solutions (in the form of maps, plans, models,) which offer new direction and meaning. REDscape operates at different scale levels, from micro; design for objects and private gardens to macro; designs for master plan, landscape plans and regional plans. All of these scale levels are seen as equally relevant in achieving a level of integrated high quality design. Design products are typically presented in the form of books, plans, models, and posters, which serve as the basis for implementing projects. Design for REDscape is about implementing as well as conceiving ideas. REDscape represents functional and innovative designs, based on clear analyses, which serve the clients’ needs. REDscape represents respecting the values of existing physical environments (landscapes, city, people) while at the same time providing new directions for necessary change. REDscape represents using the qualities of the underlying landscape, whether of an urban setting or a region, as a focus for it’s design approach. REDscape represents design as an open process, which requires dialogue and exchange. How does REDscape approach design tasks? Landscapes are dynamic, cultural artefacts which have deliberately been shaped and crafted over long periods of time. Design tasks are approached by considering existing landscapes (regional or urban) as deliberately motivated systems that require further interpretation. REDscape views landscape as built artefact and not natural entity. This philosophy of landscape is described in the name of the office by integrating RED, the symbol of the built environment with – scape, the unbuilt environment to form an approach called REDscape. REDscape sets out to explore landscapes and urban conditions with a view to understanding and interpreting them culturally, emotionally and technically to then propose directions for change and transformation. Increasing urban expansion, higher living densities and changing global dynamics are all contributors to the increasing requirement for the careful understanding, utilisation, and interpretation of existing landscapes for the adaptation of new functions such as living, working, recreation, nature development, and water management.

On 31st March, the Municipality of Leusden and its residents opened 3,5km of the newly refurbished Grebbe line, a national monument and defence line based on inundation. The refurbishment project was part of its green infrastructure development plan and was designed by REDscape.

During the opening a walking tour for residents was organised to visit the highlights. The masterplan formed the backbone for redesigning the line to include new pedestrian bridges and connections, path systems, sandbag walls (coupures), a sluice connection, art installations and other works.

In the 1970’s one section of the Line was completely removed to construct a new business park at ter Horst. Two art installations were designed at this place to mark the old route of the historical line. The art works form a three-dimensional installation (see images) which becomes a two-dimensional section of the former defensive d**e, when viewed from the side. Other interventions included, a graffiti bunker, a bat bunker, a play bunker for children and an extended QR code information system.

Dublin Port Greenway-A new amenity for Dublin Bay

The application for the construction of a new Greenway of 3,5 km has been accepted by the Dublin City Council. The greenway links the port to its northern periphery and ends in a linear park with spectacular views over Dublin bay. The park is to form the new periphery of the northern port with views to arriving ferries and cruisers. The landscape plan developed by REDscape set out a new vision based around the ambitions of Dublin Port’s masterplan 2040 and its new internal infrastructure plan, which was developed by Roughan O Donavan engineers.

Train Lodge Amsterdam - A runaway succes.

Since opening the hostel in June, local entrepreneur and train fan Harry De Boer has succeeded in achieving his dream and created a train lodge. The recycled train has been converted to a hostel for tourists. REDscape developed the design for the public realm together with the city of Amsterdam. Inspired by train depots and their mix of gravel, colourful informal planting and long curving lines, REDscape designed the setting for the city’s first train lodge. The perennial planting ties in with the colour scheme of the trains and adds a new buzz to this otherwise monofunctional location. The city of Amsterdam has started a new programme of initiatives to enliven the district which is transforming into an increasingly attractive location for residential and commercial activities.

Planning a weekend in Amsterdam with friends, then hitch a ride to the train lodge for a novel stay. See link for more booking information: http://www.trainlodge.com/en/

New Generation Flood Protection: Flumina Hiberniae 2040 starts

The launch of of the Flumina 2040 Workshops, the design led project for the future of Irish rivers has started. Initiated by REDscape in collaboration with several Dutch offices and hosted by the OPW in Dublin Castle, the workshop was attended by County Councils from around Ireland. The discourse was refresing and optimisitic. The presentations by Palmbout Urban Design, Dingeman Deijs, Van Paridon de Groot and REDscape were followed by open discourse, as approaches between Dutch and Irish flood protection were shared. Break out sessions were followed by active participation as new concepts and opportunities for Irish rivers were sketched, ideas discussed and new regional insights and opportunities emerged. The findings of this exciting project are to be presented later this year.

New village park: Reconstruction of Herzog Park

Following a public consultation for Herzog Park, different options were considered by the residents. They decided that the former bowling green was to be recalibrated for use as tennis courts. Colourful plantings and new activities including an ecological garden and adventure play area were integrated into the new design. The overall effect is to transform the space from an enclosed, under utilised area into a multifaceted village green, reconnecting the people of Rathgar with their own village park.

Important lessons learned from Tempelhofer Airport regarding citizens’ participation

- Initiation of public participation in pioneer projects can generate social capital and platforms supported by municipalities that provide profound instruments. Also establish clear policy balancing freedom and necessary regulations.

- Grant people freedom to create and initiate. The connection between formal planning and informal developments can be made through incremental planning, observation, and support. Results substantiate future improvements.

- Planners have to be able to respect a large diversity of small scale users and support initiated impulses as transparent as possible to reach a large diversity of citizens. Coordination can be complex and only accomplished by professionals.

- Allow innovation, give projects time and freedom to develop. Concepts of Tempelhofer Freiheit can be easily applied in other cities to find new uses for empty areas with special quality for citizens. A creative and engaged civil society supports a bottom up, top-down combination.

The Green Road is a 10 ha large military park for nature and recreation designed by REDscape Landscape and Urbanism. The park, commissioned by the Dutch Forestry Commission and Linieland, was largely completed in 2015. The Green Road Works is a former defensive trench and bunker system dating from 1918. The site is part of a larger military landscape belonging to the “Lek-acces”, a complex of forts, works and bunker systems, built to defend the river Lek from invasion from the east. Unique for this site is the range and variety of bunkers, peppered throughout the site. A tourist ferry in the summer, connects The Green Road Works to the adjacent military sites of Honswijk, Spoel and Everdingen.
