The building we designed for Wisselspoor is all about creating connections.

Residents are encouraged to move around and interact with each other by the myriad of little moments throughout the building.

Destinations such as the bike parking, launderette and the collective roof terrace, are strung together along attractive and well lit hallways and staircases. The expressive fire escape protrudes from the masonry façade and also creates a direct connection with the park.

The deliberations by the juries were especially thoughtful, as was the conclusion of the evening by director .vantklooster.

A big thank you to for putting together the program. Thank you for sharing the visual documentary of the evening.

A warm thank you to all those involved and again a big thank you to our client Stichting Samenwonen-Samenleven.

In 2022 BETA was selected to design a hybrid building in Rotterdam's Baan district combining a residential building with a school, artist studios and a café. We're happy to soon start work on the preliminary design phase.
On an urban level the building is an intermediary between the typical Rotterdam building height of about 5 floors and the high-rise zone with towers like CoolTower by and the Baan Tower by .
‘Stroomhuis’ is a design which quite literally builds on the rich history of this part of Rotterdam. Located on the so-called ‘fire-boundary’ – the extents to which the bombing in early WWII destroyed the city center of Rotterdam – we can see many different layers of the city’s history next to each other. With ‘Stroomhuis’, an attempt is made to connect to these layers and to invigorate the context with a new addition. As such the building will cantilever over an expressive former substation from which the building will draw its architectural cues.

Beautiful images of Draaier op Oostenburg by right before the residents moved in. Quite visible are the window openings and how they switch in size and direction along with the housing typology. The expressive tectonics of the concrete façade react to the mighty blue crane directly in front of the building along the VOC Kade.
