Pinus banksiana is a species built for resilience, at home on poor sandy soils and in bitter cold that would defeat most other plants. The cultivar 'Arktis' brings that raw northern character into the garden. As a multi-stem evergreen specimen it develops into something truly sculptural, each stem and branch twisting and now covered with fresh pollen cones.

Malus trilobata is one of the lesser-known gems of the crab apple family. Native to the eastern Mediterranean, it performs well in hot environments, and the shiny, tri-lobed leaves are unlike any other ornamental apple, deeply cut, almost maple-like, turning brilliant shades of red and orange in autumn. This multi-stem Japanese hornbeam is understated: refined in structure, subtle in beauty, and rewarding to those who take the time to notice. As spring takes hold, Carpinus japonica unfurls its first crisp leaves, neatly ribbed, deeply veined, and vivid with the fresh green of the season. The delicate flower catkins are already there too, hanging softly between the new growth.

Before a single leaf appears, the Cercis siliquastrum erupts in a cloud of rose-purple blossom. This multi-stem Judas tree is elegant in form and spectacular in bloom. The flowers emerge directly from the branches and even the trunk, a remarkable phenomenon known as cauliflory. The result is a tree covered in colour from top to bottom.
