Designers of the Future

Designers of the Future Lecture series initiated by the Wouter Mikmak Foundation, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment TU Delft and study association Stylos.

Every year, the Wouter Mikmak Foundation invites a designer with outstanding work and viewpoints to lecture in the series Designers of the Future. Architects, urban designers and planners, landscape architects and theoreticians from all over the world share their views on future developments and challenges. During these lectures, the speakers discuss their individual perspective on a particular to

pic that exerts an influence on the development of the field of the design sciences. This perspective will be illustrated through exemplary case-studies that have emerged in the field and through their own work. A respondent is also invited to react on the perspective that is brought to the fore. The Designers of the Future lectures are subsequently published.

How can we connect people with their environments? This question plays a key role in the lecture of Marthijn Pool at Young Wolves NL coming Thursday. Pool is founding partner at space&matter, an Amsterdam based office for architecture, urban planning and concept development. In 2010 they brought together a group that put forth the winning concept for reimagining the site of the former de Ceuvel shipyard in Amsterdam North. The new green oasis of de Ceuvel creates a on-land harbor for secondhand house boats, which otherwise would have ended up in a junkyard and thereby generates a new piece of city. Space&matter's community-driven strategies and innovative approaches redefine how architecture can intervene in the urban fabric.

"The architectural climate in The Netherlands would benefit from serious introspection" - Job Floris, co-founder of Monadnock, urges the Designers of the Future visitors to question the production of architecture in the Dutch context and open it up for debate. Join the discussion coming Thursday!

The Rotterdam-based practice Monadnock works on contemporary buildings, consciously embedding architecture in the cultural production of our generation by interrogating themes as the contemporary and tradition, convention and banality, constructive logic and illusionary representation. Monadnock aims at an architecture which combines beauty, efficiency and transfers architectural knowledge.

We would like to introduce Gus Tielens, one of the speakers at Young Wolves NL. Tielens is a partner of Korth Tielens, an Amsterdam-based office that has taken an extraordinary path in the practice of Dutch architecture. Within the force field of clients and contractors they have developed an approach that links craftsmanship to a contextual design attitude, resulting in a remarkably understated architectural handwriting and fascinating projects.

Coming Thursday she will talk about claiming context, infrastructure and a buildings' DNA.
