Do you enjoy relaxing next to a fireplace or a cozy fire on your patio? If the answer is “yes”, check out some tips on how to store your firewood.



1. Choose a good location for your stockpile

While it is handy to store firewood close to your house, it is not always a good idea. Stacking wood directly against your house can trap moisture between the wood and the building, which can result in mildew, discoloration, or rot. And if you live in an area with dry conditions, a firewood stack close to your home could become a serious fire hazard

2. Water protection

Even though the wood is stacked outside, it should not be completely exposed to the elements. Ideally, there would be a roof of it, but using a tarp is also a good option to keep the water off. Do not cover the stockpile completely, it will only trap moisture inside. Just throw the tarp over it to cover the top few rows of firewood.

3. Keep it off the ground

Never stack your firewood directly on the ground. Moisture buildup on the bottom will very likely result in rot. You can use a special log rack, treated wood boards, or other types of material suited for the task.

4. Stack it properly

The logs should not be stacked too tightly to allow moisture to evaporate and the logs to dry out properly. Keep a bit of space between the logs to ensure airflow. Stack the wood making sure that the ends are even and the pile is stable.
