In August, we kicked off the new edition of our residency programme with artist Valentino Russo. We were humbled to receive nearly 150 submissions to our open call and found that Valentino's proposal and working method aligned in an exciting and unexpected way with B32's vision.

During his residency, he will further research concepts of 'unsustainability' and 'disequilibrium', among others, by conducting fieldwork in and around the facilities hosting data centres in the Limburg cities of Geleen, Heerlen, and Maastricht.

To welcome him to Maastricht, we’re hosting an informal get-together with on Thursday, August 15th, starting at 6 p.m.
At 7 p.m., we’ll screen a selection of video works by Valentino.
Drop by before 9 p.m. for a chat and a drink (or some homemade green gazpacho!).

On Friday, August 23rd, from 6 p.m. and Saturday, August 24th, from 3 p.m., Valentino will present his research and work-in-progress during an open studio. A guided tour with the artist will take place on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a small reception.

In augustus zijn we gestart met de nieuwe editie van ons residentieprogramma met kunstenaar Valentino Russo. We waren vereerd om bijna 150 inzendingen voor onze open call te ontvangen en ontdekten dat Valentino's voorstel en werkmethoden op een spannende en onverwachte manier aansluiten bij de visie van B32.

Tijdens zijn residentie zal hij verder onderzoek doen naar concepten zoals 'onduurzaamheid' en 'onevenwicht' door veldwerk uit te voeren in en rond de faciliteiten die datacenters huisvesten in de Limburgse steden Geleen, Heerlen en Maastricht.

Om hem welkom te heten in Maastricht, organiseren we een informele bijeenkomst op donderdag 15 augustus, beginnend om 18:00 uur. Om 19:00 uur tonen we een selectie van videowerken van Valentino. Kom langs voor een praatje en een drankje (of wat huisgemaakte groene gazpacho!) voor 21:00 uur.

Op vrijdag 23 augustus, vanaf 18:00 uur, en zaterdag 24 augustus, vanaf 15:00 uur, zal Valentino zijn onderzoek en werk-in-progress presenteren tijdens een open studio. Op vrijdag om 18:00 uur vindt een rondleiding met de kunstenaar plaats, gevolgd door een kleine receptie.

All events take place at B32's location at Mariabastion 50. Admission is free. Spoken language is English, but our team also speaks Dutch and is eager to help mediate.

Alle evenementen vinden plaats op de locatie van B32 aan Mariabastion 50. Toegang is gratis. De voertaal is Engels, maar ons team spreekt ook Nederlands en staat klaar om te helpen met bemiddelen.

house – toolkit

Rosa Vrij nodigt je uit voor de lancering van de house – toolkit op zaterdag 11 november. Een voorlopig laatste werk binnen the house universe – een artistiek onderzoek waar Rosa sinds 2017 aan werkt.

"Ga op verkenning in je eigen huis. Hoe verhoud je je tot de ruimte om je heen? Wat maakt je huis je thuis? Bekijk het met nieuwe ogen met behulp van deze toolkit. Een mindfulness-oefening, creatieve uitlaatklep en ode aan de speelsheid in één.

De toolkit is het resultaat van 30 huisbezoeken in Limburg. Met mijn koffertje vol materialen reisde ik van deur tot deur voor een privéworkshop. Ik bezocht bewoners van krakende huizen die al generaties in de familie zijn, tijdelijke, steriele verzorgingstehuizen, huizen waar de dozen nooit zijn uitgepakt, huizen waarvan afscheid werd genomen. Zo ontwikkelde ik een methode waarmee mensen hun relatie tot hun eigen huis kunnen onderzoeken. Met de toolkit kunnen mensen de workshop nu ook uitvoeren zonder mij."

Naast de start van de verkoop van de toolkit, is er een expositie van de creaties en documentatie van deze workshops te zien.

Jo Frenken

3 t/m 24 september | opening op zaterdag 2 september, 17:00u

Op zaterdag 2 september om 17 uur opent de tentoonstelling Gravity van Jo Frenken in B32 Artspace, Mariabastion 50, Maastricht.

Deze zomer was kunstenaar Jo Frenken te gast bij B32, de ruimte was twee maanden lang zijn werkplek, waarvan hij de uitkomsten presenteert tot eind september. Een project van Jo Frenken begint meestal in de vorm van een boek. Zijn fascinatie voor boeken heeft zich ontwikkeld gedurende de decennia dat hij als deelnemer en begeleider grafische technieken werkte aan de Jan van Eyck Academie. Tijdens zijn werkperiode in B32 vertaald hij zijn meest recente boek naar de ruimte van B32.

Op zondag 10 september om 16 uur proberen Caroline Berkers, klarinet en Ella Klomp op f***t het vloerstuk van Jo Frenken te “spelen”.
De tentoonstelling is te bezoeken op zaterdag en zondag tussen 13u en 17u, t/m 24 september.

If I Could Tell You I Would Let You Know

Van 14.04 t/m 16.04 is er in B32 een presentatie te zien van fotografen Anke van Geffen, Grigoris Vourekas, Huub Meijers, Lex Borghans, Mirjam Barnasconi, Sven Kreisig en Wim Didderen, onder begeleiding van Romy Finke.
De opening is op zaterdag 15 april tussen 16–18u. Welkom!

HINDSIGHT • SWAP #5

‘Above all, let us feel the work. Let it be visual, to be experienced, and not just to be understood.’

Hindsight means collecting. The collecting and collections of four artists from the Netherlands and Belgium, whose work across different media shares a finesse, an attention to detail and an importance of the final gestures. The collecting of memories, ideas, forms, and shapes to then pour these into scenographies, into certain spatial constellations. The collecting of own archives and bringing these together in this exhibition, that can be seen more as a collaboration.

Hindsight means time. The time for reflecting on something that has happened. The time for rethinking things in the past with the knowledge of the present. The time in the past that four artists put into the making of their work. The time in the present that they come together to bring these works together into a show. The time in the future that they ask from us as viewers to look at their work.

Hindsight means condensation. The condensation of initial inspiration into ideas, and from ideas and sketches into the final visual works. The process of condensation by focusing only on the details that demand to be put into the art and filtering out the rest. The condensation from a full artist studio into a selection of works that fit into a car or a bag to be carried by two hands, into a curated collection of works by each artist as they are distilled into a cohesive exhibition during the work process at B32. The act of condensation also functions an act of expansion: to be inspired by each other and have the final result be greater than the sum of its parts.

Hindsight is the fifth exhibition in the SWAP series, initiated by Karin Peulen and hosted at B32. In this exhibition, artists Ilse Van Roy, Fee Veraghtert, Famke Storms and Louisa Vergozisi come together to create an exhibition that highlights the places where their practices overlap: in special attention to detail, emphasis on formal aspects such as colour, shapes and spatial composition, and utmost care and precision.

Hindsight is on show at B32 from 9 October until 6 November 2022. Join us at the opening on Sunday 9 October at 15.00.

Zaterdag 1 oktober vanaf 15:00–19:00u ben je van harte welkom bij de finnisage van SWAP #4: I've been thinking, met bijdrages van Lizzie Veldkamp, Nele Plessers, Emily Hutchings & Jules Coumans.

In plaats van een tentoonstelling met een opening, gebruikten de kunstenaars van SWAP #4 de ruimte van B32 de afgelopen weken als werkruimte, als plek voor discussies en ontmoeting en voor workshops met kinderen uit de buurt. Het eindresultaat is komend weekend te zien, de kunstenaars zijn zelf aanwezig en gaan graag met je in gesprek.

Saturday 1 October from 15:00-19:00 you are welcome to the finnisage of SWAP #4: I've been thinking, with contributions by Lizzie Veldkamp, Nele Plessers, Emily Hutchings & Jules Coumans.

Instead of an exhibition with an opening, the artists of SWAP #4 used B32's space over the past few weeks as a workspace, as a place for discussions and encounters, and for workshops with children from the neighbourhood. The final result will be on show this coming weekend, the artists themselves will be present and happy to talk to you.

"What happens when we cede ownership of an exhibition?
What if the visitor becomes a participant of the exhibition and can help determine how it is put up?
What if there is no work, but only a collection?
How can you as artist and visitor together determine the value of art on display and what could that mean?"
