B+O Architecture and Urban Design is an innovative, entrepreneurial and multi-disciplinary architectural firm located in Meppel and Amsterdam (the Netherlands). B+O Architecture and Urban Design is a challenging, entrepreneurial and multi -disciplinary architectural firm with extensive expertise within the various disciplines of architecture. This means that we always take the context as a startin

g point and substantiate within the set limits. We therefore stand for contextual architecture: versatile, powerful , extremely diverse and not to be summarized in one style. Our project portfolio ranges from private houses and redevelopment tasks to large-scale healthcare and retail projects. In every project we strive for maximum sustainability, in the broadest sense of the word. We have extensive knowledge and experience in the construction of energy-neutral, passive and self-sufficient houses . We have also worked on a number of redevelopment projects. We anticipate in any design issues that will play in the future. A design is truly sustainable when it can be properly adapted to the requirements of the time.

Today we celebrate the official opening of the hotel in the old Horticultural School in Frederiksoord, following a thorough restoration and renovation. After years of vacancy, this national monument has been given new life. The location, which is closely linked to the history of education within the Colonies of Benevolence, is now ready for the future. The building has been carefully restored and renovated with respect for its monumental character and meets contemporary hospitality requirements.

The project brings together restoration, repurposing and sustainability. The building is completely gas-free and equipped with solar panels. Starting tomorrow, guests can stay in one of the 15 hotel rooms and experience
the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Frederiksoord.

Projects like this are about more than architecture. They are about continuity — preserving stories from the past while simultaneously creating space for new stories.

On February 12th, 2026, a participatory evening was held in Emmen for the upcoming residential development project in theformer Hemmen lcoation. Together with our client Woonstaete and the Gemeente Emmen , we explained the plans to local residents and stakeholders.During the meeting, we presented the urban and architectural design of the new residential neighborhood, consisting of three apartment buildings thoughtfully integrated into the surrounding landscape.

The project includes nearly 70 rental and owner-occupied apartments and draws inspiration from the Drenthe landscape and the nearby Schimmer Es area. Emphasis is placed on high-quality public spaces, greenery, biodiversity, and sustainable solutions. Parking is largely located below ground level, allowing for a calm and green environment for social interaction and everyday life.

We thank all participants for their active involvement, valuable feedback, and open discussion. The insights gained will be an important input for the next phases of the project. The project was developed in collaboration with our long-term client .

Through various projects over the years, we have had the opportunity to engage with the distinctive historical landscape of the Koloniën van Weldadigheid, informing our approach to context-sensitive architecture. Founded in the early 19th century as a social project by the van Weldadigheid, these colonies gave impoverished families a new beginning through work, education, and thoughtfully planned landscapes.

Through our collaboration, we have realized projects that respect heritage while embracing contemporary solutions:
⏺ Care Apartments in Wilhelminaoord – preserving a historic national monument former basket-making and weaving workshop,while adding new annexes reflecting modern care needs for people on the autism spectrum.
⏺ 62 New Colonial Houses in Frederiksoord – restoring the original village landscape with energy self-sufficient homes.
⏺ Historic Horticultural School in Frederiksoord – a national monument brought back to life with sustainable design, boutique hotel rooms, and communal spaces.
⏺ Depot at Museum De Proefkolonie – revitalizing a 100-year-old depot for the exhibition “Mobility in the Colony of Benevolence,” a café, and group spaces connecting past and present.

Every project is designed to honor the area’s character while creating functional, sustainable, and inspiring spaces for future generations.

The Gastenhuis in Herten (Roermond) project is an example of our long-term focus on the design and realization of facilities for people with dementia. The Gastenhuis is situated in the northwestern corner of the "Oolderveste" residential area, at the far end of the park, which is centrally located in this part of the neighbourhood and was designed with input from the residents of the neighbourhood.

The building provides 20 residential units, including apartments for couples, and is designed to support clarity, orientation, and the daily operation of care. The spatial layout combines private apartments with shared living and communal spaces, which form the center of everyday life in the house.

The architectural expression is derived from the local context of the Limburg region. Working with traditional scale, materials, and façade rhythm supports the integration of the building into the residential neighbourhood “Oolderveste” and contributes to a familiar environment for residents.

The project was completed and commissioned in 2023 and confirms our approach: to design functional, operationally efficient, and long-term sustainable buildings tailored to the specific requirements of dementia care, where professionals in the healthcare and care sector can work in a pleasant way to provide its residents with the best possible care.

One of our upcoming projects, developed in collaboration with Maatschappij van Weldadigheid, is the renovation and expansion of the historic Horticultural School in Frederiksoord.

This national monument is finally being brought back to life after years of neglect. Once renovated, the building will be fully sustainable and completely gas-free.

From mid-2026, guests will be able to enjoy a stay in 15 boutique hotel rooms, offering the perfect place to relax after a day spent exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site “Colonies of Benevolence.”

Are you a student or recent graduate in Architecture, Urban Design, or Landscape Architecture and looking to gain hands-on experience in a real-world setting?

Join B+O Architecture and Urban Design for a 6 month internship and become part of a creative, multidisciplinary environment where you’ll be immersed in our design processes. You’ll work on a diverse range of projects of all scales – from private housing and healthcare facilities to urban (re)development and landscape design.

Who are we looking for?
• A student or recent graduate with a strong interest in architecture or urban/landscape design;
• Good command of English;
• Basic knowledge of programs such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and AutoCAD;
• Additional skills in Illustrator, QGIS, SketchUp, Twinmotion or Archicad are a plus;
• A team player who is eager to learn, take initiative, and grow together.
