The residency of ... G (GB)

Sometimes things break at EKWC. It’s people working with ceramics. But when G’s work broke in two, it was particularly heart-breaking. Her large sculpture is like an abstract body with two arms, mounted with satellite dishes, arching towards each other. The dishes, found discarded in the street, speak — inevitably — of distance and communication. Tentatively reaching out, their LNBs nearly touching, they become incredibly sensitive to the slightest signal, there’s an awareness of the other’s presence, an intense longing to connect. Michelangelo’s touch of life comes to mind, that tantalising gap between the fingers of Adam and his Creator. They belong to different realms — yet both arms grow from the same body, there’s a physical connection, a heart-shaped embrace that can’t be broken… And then it broke, straight down the middle. Whether you perceive the sculpture as personal or social, the rupture is painful; the desire to mend it immense.

G coil-built her large-scale sculpture in three parts - two cylindrical, arching arms built to snuggly fit into a horizontal base. The work was once-fired and G planned to use other (non-ceramic/glaze) materials to finish its surface. Additionally, she made a two-part plaster mould of a stiletto snakeskin boot and experimented with augmenting the form and with adding additional texture to slip-cast pieces.

Last Saturday, we celebrated the premiere of the short film De Gebakken Kamer, made by C.T.H. Fransen in close collaboration with Koos Buster. The work remains at EKWC as a permanent installation, with the film on display next to the ceramic room.

Following the premiere, visitors were invited to explore EKWC’s Test Case ###VII. They toured the studios, talked to residents and alumni who presented work they recently made at EKWC, and caught up with colleagues and friends. We are already looking forward to the next edition: Test Case ###VIII will take place on 3 October.

FINAL CALL: OPEN CALL FOR SPANISH ARTISTS
Are you a Spanish artist eager to work with ceramics on an advanced artistic level? Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and the European Ceramic Work centre (EKWC) are gladly inviting professional Spanish artists of all disciplines to apply for a challenging ceramics residency. The deadline for applications is 31 May 2026.

You don’t need to be experienced or even familiar with ceramics. We do ask for an experimental attitude and an imaginative work plan with a strong concept. What do you dream of achieving in twelve weeks’ time that wouldn’t be possible without EKWC’s facilities and expert advice?

There is one residency available. AC/E will cover all costs for the residency, including a fixed budget for material and living expenses, and travelling from and to Spain. The residency will take place from 13 August to 4 November 2026. For more information, check the link in bio.

*Please note: this residency is only open to Spanish nationals.

The residency of ... Karina Puuffin (UA)

In 2014, Karina Puuffin fled Ukraine with her parents for the Netherlands, where she studied art. Until recently, the war ‘back home’ wasn’t a theme in her practice, which is mainly concerned with breaking down barriers between high and low art. Her work is an ongoing process of deconstruction: painting becomes spatial installation becomes a riff on any surviving modernist myths; funny, irreverent and carefully made. Interestingly, Puuffin’s work at EKWC turned out physically flat, like colourful two-dimensional ceramic renderings of three-dimensional sculptures. They’re hanging from the wall, next to speech bubbles declaring they are art, or shy. There are many separate pieces of a possible puzzle, like parts for DIY artworks, and then there is this large mosaic that the artist made together with her grandmother, to replace a lost childhood drawing. The peaceful scene misses a tile. “I suppose I can’t ignore it any longer,” Puuffin says.

Puuffin worked with EKWC’s fine white clay body to produce her series of works. She used the slab-making technique to produces her tiles and with hand-building techniques to produce her chain-like hanging sculptures. To achieve bright, vivid colours she often applied underglaze under shiny glazes and textured her work through drawing/scratching into the clay and/or through glaze application. She experimented with both oxidization and reduction firing.
