Woonwerk Architecten bv is a architecture and urban design agency based in Rotterdam and Antwerp JDWA is all about architecture & complex urban development.

Real needs are often beyond written briefs and only become apparent through discussion. This is why designing with and for people in the neighborhoods is a very important aspect of our work. Standard concepts are never applied directly but change according to the project’s context. A working process of intense communication and interaction between client, users and the design team.

*The power of social cohesion within healthcare*

According to the Raad voor Volksgezondheid & Samenleving (RVS) (Council for Public Health & Society), not enough attention is given to the influence (or the lack of) social interaction - on our health.

The concept of Living-Inn Winkelsteeg, a residential project by Woonwerk Architecten in collaboration with Roozen van Hoppe Groep and Gemeente Nijmegen, demonstrates how care, well-being and design can reinforce each other.
And these are the five guiding principles to our design decisions:

3 24/hr care
4 Green program
5 Social program

Kasteelplein becomes Kasteelpark

Woonwerk + Denc-studio + aAD win the design competition for the redevelopment of the Kasteelplein area in Lint. Commissioned by Thuisrand and the Municipality of Lint, they are designing a “residential landscape for the future.”
The outdated housing will be replaced by contemporary, sustainable homes through a phased redevelopment featuring three compact residential courtyards, two green fingers, and a robust blue-green network that connects to the adjacent municipal park.

At the end of last year, we presented the plan to local residents. We received positive feedback and gathered valuable ideas to further develop the design.

What a great way to end the year!

After 1.5 years of designing Living-Inn Winkelsteeg in Nijmegen, we’re excited to finally share that the next phase is about to begin!
Construction of 442 homes, divided over four buildings at De Kanaalknoop in Winkelsteeg, will start soon – transforming the area from an industrial zone into a green, vibrant, and future-proof living and care environment.

Living-Inn focuses on community-oriented living for all generations, with healthy living, care & safety, facilities, and a strong sense of community at its core. Four buildings arranged around a central square form the social heart of the project, each with its own identity and housing typology from care residences to multi-generational homes.

We are proud of a plan where architecture, care, and community truly come together, creating a place that fosters connection, well-being, and quality of life.

Excursion to the Schipperskwartier, Antwerp

A couple of weeks ago Woonwerk Architecten, together with Stad Antwerpen, organised an excursion to the Schipperskwartier in Antwerpen, for Gemeente Utrecht, ‘afdeling Strategie, Lobby en Stedelijke Sturing’. This neighbourhood is currently considered “in-transition” and our recent developments in the area are interesting examples of new city dynamics, which is of course a recurring condition in many other places.

We visited our project Oudemansstraat where Rik de Vooght and Rutger Boydens (Woonwerk Architecten) together with AG Vespa, informed the group about the project as a whole but also highlighting the differences in work methods between The Netherlands and Belgium. Next to this project we also visited the project Falconhoven. Filip Smits, the director of City Projects of the city of Antwerp was our special tour guide through Schipperskwartier and Valerie Van de Velde from Atelier Stadsbouwmeester Antwerpen taught us more about the city developments in her very interesting presentation.

It was an informative and valuable exchange of which we hope develops into a future collaboration.

Klimaattop Gebouwde Omgeving 2025

A couple of weeks ago Evelien did a presentation about the projects Ubuntuplein and Knarrenhof together with Britt van der Zandt of Heijmans on the Klimaattop Gebouwde Omgeving. They talked about the importance of active participation of habitants in these developments and created a method for designers and developers to establish this involvement of habitants.

Our project “Oudemansstraat” is showing off online!

We are delighted and proud to see that our project on the Oudemansstraat in Schipperskwartier, Antwerp is published in different magazines and on multiple platforms. This project was part of the transformation of the district into a contemporary and attractive area. Specifically: the building of a former nightclub was converted into 23 new affordable homes.

This remarkable transformation is also characterized by a sustainable and a communal component. Existing building structure was reused and selective demolition of parts that could not be used was carried out. An inner garden was made for social cohesion within the block that encourages interaction among residents.
