RIJNVLIET WINS DEEZEN AWARD!! – We’re thrilled to share that Rijnvliet has won a Dezeen Award in the Landscape and Urban Design category 🎉🎉

Rijnvliet transforms a typical development into an edible, climate-resilient neighborhood that integrates nature into daily life. Demonstrating that edible neighborhoods are both achievable and scalable. And the good news is the food forest principle can be applied in new developments as well as existing districts with the right expertise. By using Nature-Based Solutions you can make space for ecological processes and align human needs with naturals systems which allows species to reinforce one another. And above all, by actively listening to residents throughout the process, neighbourhoods can truly reflect local needs, foster a sense of ownership, and remain resilient over time. Rijnvliet proves that a nature-inclusive, community-driven approach benefits everyone.

A huge thank you to the Rijnvliet team, the judges, and congratulations to all fellow winners!

Rijnvliet was commissioned by the Municipality of Utrecht. The urban plan was designed by de Zwarte Hond, the layout of the landscape as edible neighborhood was designed and elaborated by Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners together with Æ Food Forestry Development in co-creation with its residents.

FELIXX’S YEAR IN REVIEW – PROJECTS
As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on an inspiring year where our projects spanned across continents, connecting people, cities, and nature.
From the Caribbean coast of Colombia to the heart of Europe, our work this year has addressed pressing environmental and urban challenges through innovative and resilient design. By restoring degraded landscapes, safeguarding water systems, and designing spaces that bring people closer to their natural surroundings, we continue to contribute to a greener, more connected future.
Each project reflects our commitment to addressing global challenges through nature-based solutions, with a focus on urban resilience, ecological value, and societal impact.
Our journey this year brought us:
1. Cartagena, Colombia – Tackling water challenges through inclusive design and nature-based actions.
2. Zwolle, the Netherlands – Transforming the Singelzone into an adaptive, connected urban landscape.
3. Almere, the Netherlands – A nature-powered city center embracing growth and climate resilience.
4. Leuven, Belgium – The Green Plan: building an urban ecosystem for a livable, sustainable future.
Each place is unique, yet bound by a common thread: connecting cities to nature and designing landscapes for a resilient tomorrow.

SERIOUS GAME IN DRENTHE - Building on the success and valuable insights from Stockholm World Water Week 2024, we were recently in Drenthe to lead a session of a new serious game. This experience further underscored the importance of actively engaging all stakeholders in the transformation of our cities, particularly when implementing nature-based solutions (NBS).

During this session, we facilitated a role-playing exercise where participants had the chance to step into each other’s roles (Local Entrepreneur, Traffic engineer and more). Together, we delved into the Zeeheldenbuurt (Hoogeveen) case study, discussing ways to enhance the area and apply innovative strategies for building greater resilience.

It was a powerful opportunity for collective reflection, the exchange of ideas, and the development of a shared vision for the future of our cities. As we’ve learned, real change happens when we collaborate. If you’re interested in exploring how we can work together to create more climate-resilient cities, we’d be happy to connect.

We thank Natuur Milieufederatie Drenthe en Provincie Drenthe for the invitation to the Symposium ‘Samen werken aan Natuurinclusief Drenthe’, which was made possible by: Het Drents Landschap, Landschapsbeheer Drenthe, IVN Natuureducatie, Natuurmonumenten en Staatsbosbeheer. Thanks for the beautiful case to Gemeente Hoogeveen
