Rotterdam - De bekende hoek van het Groot Handelsgebouw, waar ooit de legendarische brasserie Engels zat, krijgt eindelijk een nieuwe bestemming. Gebouweigenaar Jamestown en horecaondernemer Tan Do, eigenaar van Little V, gaan er begin volgend jaar een restaurant openen.

In the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, in the midst of the Battle of Irpin, the STU (State Tax University) suffered a devastating attack. Particularly hard hit was its iconic main building, which sits prominently on the main streets of Irpin, as we witnessed during our visit in June 2022. Rather than simply rebuilding what was lost, the STU is aiming for a transformation that meets its current needs and functions.

MASA architects and MADMA urbanism+landscape decided to donate the preliminary design of this building and the surrounding landscape, in collaboration with our local partners: Druid Project Bureau, Beloded Landscaping and IRS (Irpin Reconstruction Summit). Despite the ongoing war, we strongly wanted to be proactive in the reconstruction of Irpin.

The challenge of the building design is to balance these two factors: Firstly, to be highly rational and repetitive in order to optimize both cost and construction efficiency; Secondly, to be a prominent building as one of the symbols of the new generation of Irpin.

Currently, the campus is hidden from the main road due to the enclosed nature of the existing main building. And the street is dominated by vehicle traffic with minimal space for pedestrians. There is an opportunity to address all of these issues through the design of the new STU main building and surrounding landscape.

The ground floor of the new STU main building, with its transparency and inclusion of public functions, effectively integrates the STU campus with the city of Irpin. The redesigned STU Garden and the revitalised street enhance public accessibility, transforming them into welcoming public space of Irpin. In addition, the striking architectural volume above contributes to the landmark status of this impressive new structure.

2022年に始まったロシア侵攻中にイルピンに位置するSTU (State Tax University) は攻撃の対象になり、我々は開戦3か月後の2022年6月に現地入りし、イルピンの幹線道路に面したこの大学の「顔」ともいえるメインの建物の悲惨な損傷を目の当たりにすることに。大学の望みははこの建物をもとの状態に建て直すのではなくアップデートしたものを建て替えることでした。

MASA architectsとMADMA urbanism+landscapeはウクライナのパートナー (Druid Project Bureau, Beloded Landscaping and IRS (Irpin Reconstruction Summit)) と共にこの新しい建物と周辺のランドスケープデザインの基本設計をSTUに寄付しました。いまだ戦時中とはいえ、目に見える形でイルピンの再建に積極的な一石を投じるためです。

この建物はイルピン再建のシンボルに成るべく運命づけられている一方、建設に関するコストパフォーマンスの高さや工法の簡略化などが必須であり、デザインはこの二つのバランスを絶妙に取ることを念頭に行われました。

破壊されたかつての建物は町に開かれたものとは言い難く、むしろこの建物により背後にある大学キャンパスは隠されている状態にあり、目の前を走るメインストリートは歩行者や自転車に対して優しいものではありませんでした。我々はデザイン (建物と周辺のランドスケープの両方) を通じてこれらの問題を一挙に解決する方法を模索しました。

新たに作られる透明性の高い一階部分は、リニュアルされたメインストリートと背後の庭とともに町や人々に開かれた新しいイルピンの公共空間として生まれ変わり、彫刻的建物上部が新たなＳＴＵので洗練された「顔」となります

We're excited to share that Hiroki Matsuura will be on the jury for the “100 Ideas for Cities” Hackathon.

This initiative aims at fostering the development and implementation of creative architectural solutions to restore and revitalize Ukrainian cities.

Architects, urban planners, engineers, and academic institutions from Ukraine and beyond are encouraged to bring forward their innovative ideas.

Focus Areas Include:
- Construction
- Architecture
- Urban Planning
- Engineering

For Cities of Ukraine:
Participating cities will provide technical tasks and initial data for the development of restoration projects targeting specific urban areas, objects, and infrastructure systems.

The Goal:
To develop and implement 100 innovative architectural projects that will play a crucial role in the renovation of Ukraine's cities.

Interested parties are encouraged to apply and contribute to this meaningful cause.

Winners will be selected on a competitive basis, ensuring the best ideas come to life.
