Rue du Trône in Brussels
Existing/proposal (you can guess what's what)
New design for the transformation of a number of outdated office buildings into an urban residential building with shops and a cafe in the plinth.
Urbanistically our intention is to emphasize the small scale perimeter block parcellation of the Rue du Trône in order to strengthen its residential physiognomy. We took as precedent the building typology of Brussels -to be found at Place Brugmann for example- with her limestone facades, arched shopfronts towards the street, vertical fenestration and horizontal articulation with the steel railings of balconies. Since the sidewalk along this side of Rue du Trône has become all too narrow we introduce an arcade which indicates also the pedestrian access to the courtyard garden and its buildings. Terraces and loggias of the residences are oriented towards the sunny courtyard, liberated from its minor buildings in order to create a park-like setting.
We will retain the existing concrete structure and replace the facade for a a more open and residential appearance with french balconies, stucco and limestone accents.⠀⠀⠀
