“A mock-up shows you how everything comes together.”

For the transformation of Utrecht Central Plaza, we designed a new façade – using ceramic elements which were developed specifically for this project, and which are combined with a new façade system. To understand exactly how this would work in reality, we decided to create a full-scale mock-up.

This allowed us to see how the material, the fittings and the detailing come together – and that is knowledge you cannot find in rendering, as can also be read in the interview given by project architect Martijn de Visser in this month’s edition of Bouwwereld.

Utrecht Central Plaza is the redevelopment of Hojel City Center II, one of the large office complexes on the Jaarbeursplein. The building is now being sustainably renovated, modernised and expanded, and made ‘Paris-Proof’. To give the office building a contemporary look, we have replaced the existing flat curtain wall with a new, richly detailed façade, featuring the ceramic elements in a warm red-copper colour.

An additional benefit of this new façade is that this also significantly improves the building’s energy performance. The building will meet very high sustainability standards: BREEAM Excellent, WELL Gold and Energy Label A++++. This sustainable character is also reflected in the future occupant: at the end of 2026, ASN Bank will move into the renovated building.

When PRO was founded ago, we mainly worked on housing projects, but schools and offices were soon added to our portfolio, with the Town Hall in Bronckhorst as a key project.

The 2000s saw numerous European tenders for town halls, including that for the new municipality of Bronckhorst in the Achterhoek. Thanks in part to our previous experience with offices for clients such as ING Bank and the embassy in Kiev, we won the contract, despite the fact that we hadn’t designed a town hall before.

Our design is inspired by the landscape of the Achterhoek – an ‘old’ landscape with rolling hills. It is a landscape through which you move differently, with winding narrow roads offering glimpses of villages, farms and country estates.

The building interacts with this landscape; the angle of the volumes and the gently sloping roof make for an interesting interplay with the perspective. Bronkhorst was designed as an ‘estate for democracy’, visible from the narrow roads through the bocage landscape.

The long road running past the town hall links all the former municipalities that now make up Bronckhorst. The Council Chamber is positioned to overlook this road, ensuring that the councilors maintain a connection with their constituents and that everyone can see democracy at work.

Initially, atelier PRO was solely responsible for the architectural design, but as the project progressed, our role was expanded to include the interior, because we understood the location and the brief so well. This made Bronckhorst our first ‘proper’ interior design commission.

At the time, Bronckhorst was the most sustainable town hall in the Netherlands – a fact that helped the project win the Green Good Design Award.

For an architectural project to really succeed, it takes more than a good design - it takes a good client. But what exactly is a good client? That is exactly what Dorte Kristensen will discuss tomorrow during the ‘Dag van de Ontwerpkracht’ (Day of the Power of Design), with Hein de Haan of the Municipality of Leeuwarden and procurement consultant Tjeerd Planting, at the invitation of the BNA.

Jeroen de Willigen, chairman of the BNA, will provide the opening remarks, Nynke-Anna Bellinga-Gerding will do the closing, and Marc Reniers of M3H will act as the moderator.

The ‘Dag van de Ontwerpkracht is an annual event organised by Platform Ontwerp NL- a collaboration between professional organisations BNA, Koninklijke NLingenieurs, BNSP, Federatie Ruimtelijke Kwaliteit, NVTL, Vereniging Deltametropool and BNI. The 2025 theme is “Connected and interwoven”.

The day kicks off with the annual Vitruvius lecture by Mooi Nederland, delivered by Thijs van Spaandonk and Noël van Dooren; the lecture is followed by a packed programme of masterclasses, with Dorte joining us for the session ‘Good clients: from smart tendering to successful design’

In almost every project that stands out it, the client played a vital role - and this is something that applies not only to our own projects, but to those of all architects. During the session, Dorte and her discussion partners will talk about the makings of a good client, and why being a good client is crucial for successful projects.

Atelier PRO looking at things? At the potential location of solar panels, to be precise!

And this is more remarkable then it might seem, because we’re on the roof of a listed monument dating from 1924, which needs to be both renovated and be made more sustainable: Building A of the in Amsterdam.

Sounds ambitious? It can be done.

We know it can be done, because we have done it before, with the renovation of Building B - the mirror-symmetrical yet identical other wing of the school complex - which was completed last year.

☀️ The rooftop of building B has been fitted with (concealed) solar panel on the roof, as well as with a thermal energy storage system. To make sure that these measures achieve their purpose, we’ve also insulated the roof and floor, installed high-quality monumental glass and improved the isolation.

♻️ In addition, we tried to reuse existing materials wherever possible - such as the central heating pipes, radiators and the original(!) seagrass floor insulation. The wooden ceiling from the PE hall was reused as an acoustic ceiling in the auditorium, steel structures were made from donor steel, and the office furniture is also pre-existing.

🌱New materials were chosen with an eye for their environmental friendliness: for example, all interior insulation is made of flax wool and all interior walls are painted with C2C paint from Ekotex.

The result? A sustainable and circular renovation, with an A+++ energy label and BENG.

Never too old to learn? Yesterday, we went back to school! 🧑‍🏫 📚

Atelier PRO went on an office excursion to the Berlage Lyceum - to see how our design has become a reality, and to learn from the delivered project.

And in this case, that is extra important, because the Berlage Lyceum consists of two identical, mirror-symmetrical buildings, and after the completion of building B at the end of last year, the renovation of building A is now ongoing - so the lessons learned from the first phase can directly be applied to the second.

🏆 More recognition for UCP!

Yesterday, the European Health Design Awards were announced, and we’re proud that the new University Center of Psychiatry in Groningen, which we designed together with for the , has been chosen as the runner up in the category Mental Health Design!

The European Health Design Awards are awarded each year by knowledge platform Architects for Health. Previously, UCP has already won the Architectenweb Care Building of the Year award, the public award of the Groninger Architectuurprijs – as well as being one of the seven nominees for the BNA Building of the Year.

Congratulations to everyone who collaborated with us on this project!

🎉Such a special moment! Two weeks ago, Queen Máxima opened the new building of Research & Diagnostics Centre Adore, designed by atelier PRO.

RDC Adore is a unique research centre, where cancer- and neuroscientists work together on new treatments for cancer and brain conditions such as dementia and multiple sclerosis. And the building is truly unique: nowhere else in the world does there exist an onco-neuro campus of this scale, with all the needed equipment, laboratories and offices.

For the first time worldwide, RDC Adore brings two related research areas, oncology and neuroscience, together under one roof. Proud to be part of this!

Our project UCP has been nominated for the BNA Best Building of the Year 2025 - and the vote for the public award is open until 14 May. The project, which atelier PRO and Vakwerk Architecten designed together for the UMCG, was chosen by the jury from almost eighty entries, in the ‘Stimulating Environments’ category.
