All SYD textiles are produced in Norway using only Norwegian raw materials and agricultural by‑streams.

The entire value chain — from wool sourcing to dyeing and weaving — is kept local to ensure traceability and reduce environmental impact.

With no synthetic fibres and no polluting dye processes, the textiles remain renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable.

SYD uses plant‑based dyes made from Norwegian flora.

This method avoids the pollution associated with conventional dyeing and keeps the textile completely free from synthetic chemicals.

Plant dyeing also allows full material transparency: every colour comes from identifiable, natural sources.

The result is a cleaner process and a textile that remains fully biodegradable.

SYD works with downgraded Norwegian wool — the lowest‑graded by‑product of meat production.

Although this wool has no commercial value, it has strong technical properties. Its natural strength allows SYD to achieve high Martindale results without adding synthetic fibres.

This challenges the assumption that durable furniture textiles must contain plastic.

SYD’s textiles are rooted in Norwegian heritage.

The wool, the colours, and the production all come from local resources and long‑standing knowledge.

By using forgotten qualities of Norwegian wool and traditional approaches to natural colour, SYD creates a textile with a clear sense of place — shaped by Norwegian landscapes, materials, and craft traditions.

SYD transforms agricultural by‑products and waste from Norwegian farms into new textiles — revealing qualities that were once forgotten.

The result: pure materials made from natural, renewable and recyclable resources, all within a Norwegian value chain.

Good for your health and for the planet.

SYD delivers textiles dyed 100% naturally — without chemicals.

We tested both plant dyes and natural wool pigments according to SS‑EN ISO 105‑B02:2014, where the requirement is 5+.

The result? We passed.

This allows us to offer clean, natural, and scientifically verified lightfast textiles — made with Norwegian flora and organic side streams.

Did you know the texstile industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters?

From carbon emissions to water use, chemicals, waste, and microplastics — the impact is massive.

Climate impact
The fashion industry is responsible for around 10% of global CO₂ emissions — more than international flights and shipping combined. Fast fashion’s rapid production cycles push this number even higher.

Water use & pollution
The industry consumes 93 billion m³ of water every year.
Textile dyeing and processing account for 20% of global industrial water pollution.

Chemicals & toxins
Over 8,000 synthetic chemicals are used in textile production, including dyes, bleaches, and PFAS.

Waste & overproduction
The world throws away 120 million tons of textiles every year.
85% ends up in landfills or is burned, while less than 1% is recycled into new textiles.

Microplastics
Synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and acrylic cause 35% of microplastic pollution in the oceans, mostly released during laundry.
Polyester is fossil‑fuel based, adding to both emissions and plastic pollution.

SYD was created with one clear mission: to develop a textile that doesn’t harm the planet.
This is why we chose to work with local, natural, renewable, and recyclable resources that are currently underused — and to produce them through a local, circular value chain, without chemicals

A textile made with care for nature, rooted in place, and designed for the future.

SYD is developed by Karen Boye, and are a Norwegian furniture and interior fabric rooted in local resources.

SYD produces furniture and interior textiles made from side streams of Norwegian agriculture. The primary raw materials are down-graded Norwegian wool and surplus plants from Norwegian crop production, which are used to naturally dye the textiles.

From the beginning, the goal was clear: to develop a furniture and interior textile with a fully Norwegian value chain, free from synthetic fibres and chemicals, while still meeting the strict ISO standards for abrasion resistance, lightfastness, pilling and fire safety. SYD has achieved exactly that.

The result is a textile that is pure, natural and fully biodegradable, woven from Norwegian wool and dyed with Norwegian flora. It demonstrates that high-performance interior textiles can be produced without relying on synthetic additives or imported raw materials.

Last week I once again lectured first-year interior architecture students at Kristiania University College in Oslo.

And as always, they were a wonderful group of students who are genuinely engaged in the use of natural materials in buildings and interior design.

Thank you for the great conversations, and thanks to
