Since 2021, we have been working for Avantor AS on the conversion of the former cement factory in Slemmestad, Norway into a new neighborhood. The Slemmestad Factory has a long-standing history of growth and pride in the local community. We are honored to take part in the exciting journey of developing this new destination filled with local history and a strong community.
Slemmestad, an urban area 30 kilometers Southwest of Oslo, is undergoing a transformation from its industrial past into a vibrant town, covering an area of 5.5 hectares. The cement production in Slemmestad dates back to the late 19th century. In 1968, Norwegian cement producers merged under Norcem, establishing substantial infrastructure, worker’s residence and other facilities that supported the community. Cement production ceased in 1989, leaving behind four concrete silos still being used for cement transit.
The towering silos and robust structures of the former industrial heritage give the area a distinct character - blending historical significance with a rough urban aesthetic. To anchor the project and minimize its environmental impact, several existing buildings will be preserved through adaptive reuse as part of the new master plan. Our goal is to design architecture that is deeply rooted in the site’s specific legacy, with the aim of making the bay a vibrant attraction in the region.
