Yes! It is official now.

We are absolutely thrilled to share that our Bankatta Community Project in Madi has been awarded the Ammodo Architecture Award 2025!

At SMA, the social aspect of design has always been one of the guiding pillars. We believe that architecture is not merely about building structures, but design is also about making a meaningful and sustainable contribution to a community. This process of participatory design and the collaborative creation of architectural interventions is not easy. Working with many people, with many ideas, opinions and experiences is challenging, but the ‘working with people, for people’, makes it also deeply rewarding. For this project, there were many hurdles, but the Bote community, the Swiss people were supportive and encouraging in so many ways.

This award is also a moment of reflection. Bankatta still faces its biggest problem - dangerously wild, ever course-changing and regularly flooding rivers which are beyond our reach to address.
So perhaps, we have been able to create a second-best local solution which provides a tangible appreciation, and a place for deliberation & celebration for their unique Bote culture. It practically offers an alternative livelihood. Besides hospitality/ wildlife related incomes, the bamboo treatment set-up we created for the project, gave 5 local youngsters a new enterprise.

For us at SMA, Bankatta is a reminder that architecture is most meaningful when it listens, adapts, and belongs.

We always believe in creating an architecture that harmonizes with its surroundings, embracing local materials, skills and culture while integrating modern knowledge and using innovative techniques.

We are humbled by the 15 professional and scientific jury members in Paris, who selected one of our projects as a FINALIST of the best 40 stone architecture buildings in the world ! This achievement, a first ever for our beloved Nepal , is a sign of hope for all designers, all architects, all landscape architects, all structural designers, all environmentalists, all educators, and all media across Nepal.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all team members, both from SMA and beyond, as well as our dedicated well-wishers and principles. We owe a special debt of appreciation to the local craftsmen who, despite being in such harsh climatic area, demonstrated unparalleled craftsmanship. Everyone's dedication and extraordinary skill have been pivotal over the seven years of conceptualizing, designing, detailing, shaping, and finally constructing Sagarmatha Next at a breathtaking altitude of 3800 meters in the beautiful Khumbu region.
