Last tuesday we arrived in Kalidevi, a mainly Tamang village in the Makwanpur valley. 20 students architecture & interior architecture from the faculty of architecture, KULeuven & 3 students of the teacher training college Erasmus Hogeschool, researching and actually building the first ‘Post-School.’ A pilot project to reactivate the traditional knowledge and instigate an active and cooperative learning environment.

For all my students and all those who wonder what we are doing in NEPAL, CONGO and soon the village of Ittoqqortoormiit in GREENLAND, where we are building physical places or 'hardware' to (re)activate the traditional 'software' as for example shown in this video. Very much in the spirit of my book 'Wild Things', and aligned with the research of Tom Callebaut on 'Generous Spaces', and the the architectural practices of Ignaas Back & Klaas Vanslembrouck focussing on contemporary building, linked with valuable traditions adding sustainability, identity and creating a continuity. In Dolakha we asked the teachers what they thought would be a good way to have more children coming to school. Their answer: Give free food! Because hungry children cannot concentrate....

This organization in Peru grows food in the schools and links it with a whole program so the children learn to grow the vegetables themselves + help the parents with growing their own food. It is a very interesting model that could easily be adapted to Nepal.
Building a school is about much more than bricks and concrete...
