When you've been in business for more than 23 years... sometimes you end up doing two kitchens in the same house - years apart.

Back in 2008 we put a new kitchen into Janine and Karl's place - the very popular (at the time) Oyster Melteca and a laminate bench top.

Fast forward 10 years and two owners on, we went back and updated the kitchen for Ruth and Nigel - this time with a 20 mm thick Caesarstone 'Rugged Concrete" bench, and White Satin Dezignatek doors and drawer fronts.

Same house, whole new look!

Kasia and Tom's kitchen needed a revamp. They had an existing stainless bench with a seating area inside the kitchen that was only big enough for one chair. They had two sets of drawers on castors which faced the dining room, so we turned them around and put them on to a proper toe kick; added a cupboard facing the dining room, and put a new extended, Primestone's Athena engineered marble-look bench on top.

We changed the doors from Oyster Melteca to Dezignatek's Milan style in 1/4 Thorndon Cream, and used Archant's Natural Iron handles - the Pavio, Rodigo and Ostro. Kasia's love of the French Provincial look is now reflected in her kitchen cabinetry!

The pictures show Before and After!

Janine thought it was about time to get rid of the brown and brighten up her bathroom vanity. She had a Formica bench, with two pot lacquer doors that had been damaged over time. Rather than throw the whole lot out when the internal cabinetry was in great order, Janine decided to change the bench and fronts.

Stone and Joinery Solutions (ex PSP Stonecraft) were able to offer a reasonable price on a left-over slab of Quantum Quartz's 'Pearly Shores', which she matched with Sage Doors' Timbalook 'Matakana' doors and drawer fronts. Janine chose a new self-rimming basin - the Debba by Roca, but kept her existing handles, which suit the new fronts perfectly.

All in all, it looks lovely and completely changes the look of the bathroom - another happy camper!

Oh what a change new doors and drawer fronts can make! Lynn and Martin were a bit over their Oyster coloured kitchen. They wanted Shaker style doors and chose Dezignatek's 'Ronda' pattern in Satin White.

We also made up a new microwave box in white and reduced the size of their fridge overhead cabinet to fit their new fridge better.

Lynn wanted a traditional style handle so picked Enko's cup pull - the M197 in brushed nickel for the drawers, and matched it with Mardeco's BN3440 for the doors.

They are VERY happy campers - the kitchen is light, white and airy, and looks great.

I have tried to set the photos as Before and Afters!

If the bones of your kitchen are good, you might be able to get away with a new bench, or new doors and drawer fronts. We can change over your old drawers to soft-close ones - maybe even put some new drawers in to a cupboard to better use the space.

Sally and Claude are a lovely couple we've worked with before. We were due to install their kitchen on the 30th March - lockdown was imminent so we managed to get the cabinetry in on the 23rd and 24th. The poor guys had to wait until Level 3 before we could template for their bench, but their electrician was able to hook up the oven and hob in a temporary bench, so they were only missing a sink for 7 weeks..... Sally has decided on a glass splashback to go behind the hob and sink, and that's all we are waiting for now.

Some Before and After shots - the camera isn't the best, but you get the idea!

A kitchen we finished before lockdown for Cherie. As you can see the old kitchen had the 70's copper rangehood, louvered pantry doors and mosaic tiled bench and splashback around a stand alone stove. This was the house's original kitchen so definitely time for an update!

Cherie decided on Primestone's "Akaroa" engineered stone bench top with standard satin white doors. The small handles recessed in to the top of the doors and drawers are 'Estrada' from Mardeco's range (https://www.mardeco.co.nz/shop/Kitchen+handles/Kitchen+Handles/+Estrada+4021.html).

Cherie finished off with some funky marble-look hexagonal tiles along the sink wall.

Nope, not a photo of a kitchen we have done - this is me going back to work tomorrow. A boot full of disinfectant wipes, hand sanitiser, Janola, cloths, sprays, latex gloves, masks and rubbish bags.

It really will be a different world post Level 4 - but now we are on Level 3 we can get back to the factory and finish off work we started before the 26th March.

So, to your kitchen! After spending soooo much time cooking and baking in the past 5 weeks, you KNOW it's time for a change, right?

There's a couple of ways you can achieve this:

1. Rip the whole thing out and start again. Depending on what materials you want to use and the size of your kitchen, this could start around $13K, installed.

2. Your kitchen may have good 'bones' - think about new doors and drawer fronts, maybe a new bench, possibly change a cupboard over to drawers to give yourselves more storage; make that fridge space bigger, or swap that old stand alone stove to a wall oven tower...it's all work we can do - and have done plenty of in the past.

And my post in March still stands:

"I am more than happy to share what I know about kitchens - with no strings attached. If you have any questions on anything kitchen-y, give me a call while it is a bit quieter and I might be able to give you advice or information that may help you make decisions on your existing kitchen or your future kitchen - that includes my friends and relatives! No obligation, no charge. My mobile number is 021 909 634 🙂".

Stay safe.

Understandably things have become a little quieter over the past week or so.

Today I had a phone call from a young woman who is getting her kitchen made by another company, but was unable to talk directly to the kitchen manufacturer (when you are building a new house through a building company that is often the case). She was very confused about some of the mechanisms for a corner cupboard - the price difference in particular - and was given my name via a friend.

It was really good to be able to help her out with her queries. I am more than happy to share what I know about kitchens - with no strings attached. If you have any questions on anything kitchen-y, give me a call while it is a bit quieter and I might be able to give you advice or information that may help you make decisions on your existing kitchen or your future kitchen - that includes my friends and relatives! Impossible to show you Before and After photos of Sue and Mike's kitchen - they shifted it in to a completely different part of the house!

The new kitchen is a galley layout. Sue and Mike wanted a 900 mm wide stand alone stove, and with the space they had they were able to put two reasonably good sized sets of drawers either side of it. The pantry door bi-folds towards the window.

The island is a generous 3 metres x 1.2 metres, allowing for narrow cabinetry underneath the seating area of the bench. The doors look like panels here, and have no handles - we have used Blum Tip-On push-to-open mechanisms. Sue and Mike decided to use the shallow window recess for more storage, and we have put two sets of drawers here.

They chose Warm White Satin laser-edge doors and drawer fronts, with a contrast of Dezignatek's "Perfect Oak" above the oven and in the seating area of the island.

We used Mardeco's Trentino and Calabria 'handle-less' handles which we powdercoated to match the Warm White Satin. We put LED strip lighting either side of the powerpack rangehood above the oven.

The bench top is in SmartStone's Triton, 30 mm thick, with mitred waterfall ends to the island.

Great clients to work for, and very happy with the job!

I think Samantha beat the current trend of black and grey by a couple of years - we did her kitchen late 2016. Her bench is Quantum Quartz Pietra Serena, 20 mm thick, and the black is Sage Doors' Acrymatte Eclipse. https://sagedoors.co.nz/products/acrymatte/. Acrymatte is a satin feel acrylic which is easier to keep clean than the standard dark melamine colours. Dark doors are tricky - they can make a space look smaller (no problem at Samantha's, plenty of light, plenty of space), and when the sun shines on them you can see every finger mark (unlike white). But boy, what a statement!

Here are some Before and After shots.

What do you do with an extra large area around the kitchen...? More kitchen! Caren's kitchen was originally confined to the windowed space you see, but by pulling a wall out she was able to keep that space AND add to it. She got her island, and a ton of tall cupboard storage. Room for two ovens, two sinks and space for the extended family to work in - all with a beach theme. This kitchen is nearly seven years old, and still looks great!

It's coming up to Christmas and you think...have I got time to get my new kitchen in...? We still have space to do your kitchen before Christmas, but most of the stone bench top companies will be closing off around mid-November. There will be a mad rush in the next few weeks and if you haven't booked your bench top template in by then, it won't happen until the new year.

For laminate benches (Formica/Primelaminate/WilonArt etc) there is more time to get organised, but we would need to be installing by the first week of December.

And don't forget I get really good commercial rates on appliances through Harvey Norman and Noel Leeming - even when they are having a sale (and let's be honest here, when AREN'T they having a sale??) I usually beat the sale price, so what you save on appliances could upgrade your kitchen drawers or pay for your glass splashback!

Give me a call today, (09) 414 2162.

Cheers

Kim
