A little insight into Luke's Painting and Papering:
I've been around painting for as long as I can remember as my dad has been a painter most of my life. I recall 'helping' him on things around the house and going out to the odd job at a young age, getting more paint on my overalls than anything I'm sure.
I started out in retail management in supermarkets out of high school and did that for quite a few years before deciding to take the leap and signed up to the pre-trade Painting and decorating course at the christchurch polytechnic. I was there for 2 weeks when the February earthquake hit and that put a pause on the course for a bit. While visiting my parents I had a phone call from the boss of a company I had signed up to do work experience with while on my course asking if I'd like to help them out on a job. Thinking it would be a one off I said yes and started on the Monday, little did I know it would lead to a full-time position and being taken on as an apprentice within the week.
Working there gave me a huge array of experience in the 3 years I was with them. I was on a team that specialized in redecorating high end homes across Christchurch and Akaroa and also did some really cool stuff like painting the hornby clock tower from a crane, being hired out to teach an exterior plastering companies guys how to paint their work and running the painting of the Rochester and Rutherford halls of residence at Canterbury uni where I had up to 15 team members on site at any given time.
In an apprenticeship you choose either wallpapering or spraying to specialize in and I went with wallpapering which I got a lot of practice in due to the insurance work involved in the rebuild after the earthquakes.
Due to health issues I had to finish up in Christchurch and moved up to work for my parents part time and get myself sorted. I ended up meeting someone and moved to Timaru to be with her, we're now married and have 3 beautiful children. In Timaru I worked for a couple of different companies but became a bit jaded and wasn't happy with how things were going with them so back to supermarkets it was for a couple of years before we made the decision to relocate the family to central otago.
That was early last year and I started up Luke's Painting and Papering as a supplement income doing small jobs where I could while my wife worked full-time and I stayed home with the kids. We had to make the decision mid last year for me to move to full-time as the business grew and it's just picked up from there, to the point where if it gets any busier I'll have to take someone on at some point. We're loving it in central and the kids are really happy at school and kindy. Everyone is so lovely down here and I've been really lucky to have done work for some amazing people. I appreciate the support and trust people have shown letting a new business take care of their place.
Thanks for listening.
