Well feels like winter might have arrived!, it was a haul to get myself motivated this morning. An early start (these dark mornings get to me) to get young man no. 1 to the airport, get myself motivation in a cup, yes coffee 😂☕️ Then time to pop the open sign out and what do I spy a beautiful rainbow 🌈 Faith restored in the day ahead.

Lots of enquires and chat about the NEW Apple/pear “Papple” this week that featured on the TV and live in the supermarket near you. Can we supply them NO, can we grow them ourselves as a home gardener NO. Are they delicious YES. Have I got an alternative I can offer you YES not 💯 the same but pretty good never the less. We have the pear apple cross Reddy Robin 🍎🍐 marketed as a Nashi but in essence it’s a Papple 👍 Or even better we have the ancient heritage pear Keifer which is likely a cross between a Chinese pear and a European pear 🍐 which is large, super juicy (thirst quenchers) This is hands down my favourite pear and in my top 5 if all fruit trees. It’s the first to flower in the season but the last fruit to ripen, beautiful fruit, self fertile, hardy , stunning autumn foliage and did I say delicious.

I have both Nashi Reddy Robin and Pear Keifer available now @$50.00 each which one will you try? Open today Saturday 9-4 🍎🍐🍎🍐

It was a pleasure to welcome the wonderful Wahine of the Te Kawau Garden Group yesterday. The weather mostly held it together and we had a wonderful morning talking about the Edible Garden journey over the years. We also chatted about my favourite fruit trees, why growing our own is so important, organics, a budding demonstration and lots of questions. Thank you for visiting and my lovely gift and of course the delish morning tea.

We have just restocked the Kath Irvine Edible Backyard pruning book, at @$30.00 it’s a little gem, practical, not over whelming and best of all Kath’s fantastic solid knowledge. We also have new stocks of “Home Grown Fruit” @$58.00 by Kath and Jason Ross Habitate - edible habitats it’s the go to inspiration and practical guide to setting up your orchard, backyard planting or fruit forest 🍎🍏

Open this week Wednesday to Saturday 9-4 see you soon 🍏🍎

Wildlife to start the week at Edible Garden, hard to believe we are now officially into winter. The long weekend afforded us some lovely weather and a chance to pause and soak up the lovely autumn rays.

It was also a time to tick ✅ off a few of those long overdue jobs that somehow fade into the background! Yes tidying the packing shed, burning the rubbish pile, and a bit more sorting of the sawdust beds (yes I mean weeding!!!)

Open this week as usual Wednesday to Saturday 9-4 but if possible avoid Thursday morning as we have the lovely Rongotea Garden Club visiting us in the morning.

Have a great short week and I look forward to seeing you all 💚 🪏 🌱

I hope you are looking forward to the long weekend, maybe you have big plans and maybe like me it’s a “staycation”. I have a list of jobs that need doing while the weather is stunning so it’s head down and shovel in hand 🪏🌱

It’s a funny time of the year here at Edible Garden Ltd as the bare rooted trees have not arrived yet (that’s next weeks task) but lots of fruit tree varieties are getting to that stage of being “sold out” so if you have been thinking about putting an order together this might be the perfect weekend to do so. Here to help if you need some advice on variety selection, sequential ripening, which rootstocks suit your soils, wind shelter etc.

Let me know what you are up to this weekend, photos are a bonus…

Open today 9-4 (Saturday) catalogues available in shop or online www.ediblegarden.co.nz

Another beautiful day at Edible Garden Ltd with lots of time outside in the nursery getting sawdust beds organised, plants out of the shade house to make a bit of room. Enjoying these beautiful days and trying to keep a balance of the never ending job list and small moments of awe at how beautiful nature is and those beautiful moments when we take a brief pause to just soak it all up, toadstools, butterflies and the neighbours happy contented cows. Happy Friday everyone as we head into a lovely long weekend 🐝🌱🐂

The last of the citrus arrived for the season 🍋🍊🍋yesterday Edible Garden Ltd. It feels like I didn’t even restock as so much was for customer orders, thank you. But that leaves my shade hose bursting at the seams, so time to call a few of you to come and collect trees and courier the rest 🚚. I will try and do a video of what citrus we have in stock later this week. Hope your week is going well, I am feeling a tad jaded as feel like my shovel 🪏 has had a good workout and the feet have also covered a few miles!!! The crazy winter season is nearly here 🌱🙂🌱

This beautiful weather is making working out in the nursery so very easy at the moment. At Edible Garden Ltd it’s time to get the sawdust beds sorted, weeded, more sawdust added and get ready for beautiful fruit trees which will start arriving next month.

Open this week Wednesday to Saturday 9-4 and toying with Sunday 11-2 but let’s see how the week and weather shape up 🍂🌞🍄

I don’t normally post on a Sunday, but today I got to spend a few hours in my veg garden, which was a delight in the sunshine and the doggos as company. First job was to make a worm farm 🪱 to sit directly in the garden. I followed the wonderful advice from Kath at Edible Backyard I have a tower worm farm which was pretty full so plenty of worms to share around. I didn’t have a lid to fit so I utilised a terracotta plant pot base. I think this will work better as my doggos will struggle to get the lid off and forage!!! It’s all settled in and I think it looks great, hoping the worms approve. I then planted my garlic 🧄 I know it’s late, but hey it’s planted, each clove got a big dollop of worm castings . A few stray lettuces planted then I set aside a section of the bed and scattered a seed mix of lupin, oats and mustard to help regenerate the soil. I will sow more as I deal with weeds!! I then layered over the garlic rows and seeds some well rotted wood chip mulch. Happy Sunday to you all…..what happened in your edible garden this weekend 🌱🪏🌱🪏
