Celebrating Family, Citrus, and New Beginnings: A Matariki Tale from Citrus Trees Direct
Kia Ora! Welcome to the very first blog post from Citrus Trees Direct, and what a special time to be starting things off – Matariki, the Māori New Year!
This year, Matariki finds most of the Citrus Trees Direct whānau gathered in Pahiatua, with the exception of a few loved ones venturing further afield. We're all here to celebrate with Gran, the heart of our family – our mum, grandmother, and great-grandmother. At an inspiring 96 years old, Gran's passion for gardening continues to bloom. Her beautiful flowers are a testament to her dedication, and her stunning Tarocco Blood Orange Standard in the conservatory is no exception. Though it took a tumble in some summer wind, you wouldn't know it now thanks to Gran's meticulous care.
Matariki, for us, is all about whānau. We'll be paying respects at the resting places of our departed loved ones, planning the vegetable garden with Gran's wisdom guiding us, and of course, sharing delicious food and laughter. And as true citrus enthusiasts, our Matariki feast wouldn't be complete without a citrus twist in every course!
A Citrus-infused Matariki Menu:
• Entrée: Marinated Snapper with a tangy Meyer and Yen Ben Lemon marinade.
• Main: Smoked salmon ravioli bathed in a citrus caper butter sauce.
• Dessert: A decadent chocolate and mandarin trifle – a delightful end to a citrusy celebration.
Planning Your Garden for the New Year:
Here is our first blog, minus the photos as Facebook wouldn't let me add them
Matariki is also a perfect time to turn your thoughts to spring and plan your garden for the coming months. Here at Citrus Trees Direct, we recommend planting citrus trees after the frosts have passed. Depending on your location, this could be anywhere from late August onwards.
Found the perfect citrus tree to add a touch of sunshine to your garden? Don't wait! Purchase it now and keep it happy in its pot until planting season arrives. If we don’t have the tree currently in stock, pre order it (no obligation to purchase) and we will notify you when they are available.
