How to create your own terrarium!

1. Chose a container

2. Pick 3-4 plants.
Some good plants are: Spike mosses, S. uncinata
S. kraussiana, Polka dot plant, Lemon button fernand, Korean rock fern.

3. Arrange Drainage layers.
Start by putting a 2-inch layer of coarse gravel, sea glass, or beach stones on the bottom of your container.
Next, use a large spoon to add a quarter- to a half-inch layer of activated charcoal on top of the gravel to prevent fungi from growing on the stones when they are wet.

4. Prep plants and terrarium design.
Design the plants’ arrangement for your terrarium. Set larger plants in the center, with smaller plants around it.

5. Plant the plants.

6. Decorate the Terrarium.

Thats It!
My next post will be about how to care for your terrariums.

5 must-know tips for houseplant care in the winter.

1. Water less often.
The more sunlight a plant receives, the thirstier it will be. This means throughout the winter when there is less sunlight, your plants need to be watered less - every 1-2 weeks depending on the plant.

2. Don’t worry about a few leaves dropping.
Your plants are just adjusting to the lower light levels of winter.

3. Lookout for pests.
Winter is prime time for those houseplant pests. Make sure to check the soil and under side of leaves when watering.

4. Resist Repotting.
It is best to repot your plants when they are in their active growing season, this is usually spring and summer.

5. Do not Fertilise.
Most plants hibernate in the winter and tend to stop growing. Because of this they do not require any fertiliser. Stop feeding the Autumn and resume in the spring when there is more light.

As summer is finally here, the temperature is getting up there! Some of our house plants just can’t cope. Here are some tips for when it is just too hot for your plant babies.

1. Get misting. Tropical plants (like ferns) can struggle in the hot dry weather. You can provide this humidity by sitting you plant on top of a tray filled with pebbles and water, or you can simple mist.

2. Water, water, water. In winter, plants will go into a sort of hibernation where they do not need much water. However, in the summer, plants need a nice deep watering every 1-2 weeks.

3. Keep your plants away from direct sunlight. It is good to check your plants and maybe move them out of the direct sunlight in the summer months.

4 thing I wish I knew before I got into houseplants:

1. Remove a little bit of soil off the top of a plant when you first buy it, sometimes there are pests and little bugs hiding.

2. The less light your plants get, the slower they will absorb water they’re given.

3. Banana peels are a great natural fertiliser. Using the peels instead of buying fertiliser they can save some money.

4. Drainage matters! Otherwise roots will rot.
