Coprosma ‘Hawera’ — the groundcover that quietly solves problems

If you’re after a plant that does the job without constant maintenance, Coprosma Hawera is a superstar

This hardy New Zealand native forms a dense, low-growing mat of fine, olive-green foliage. It typically spreads up to 2 metres wide while staying low (around 10–12cm at maturity), creating a soft, almost moss-like layer across the ground.

What sets it apart is how it performs over time:

• Naturally weed-suppressing once established

• Handles coastal wind, frost, drought, and poor soils

• Stays low and compact, even at maturity

• Tough enough for edges, driveways, and high-use areas

Coprosma ‘Karo Red’ ... big colour punch.

This hardy NZ native is loved for its rich red-bronze foliage that deepens through the cooler months. It’s naturally compact, low-maintenance, and perfect for adding year-round colour to gardens, borders, and modern landscapes. Great in pots, great in coastal conditions, and happy in full sun to part shade.

A tough little shrub with tonnes of attitude — and one of the easiest ways to lift a space with bold, glossy colour.

Yellow-Legged Hornet vs German Wasp 🐝
Here’s how to tell the difference, as they look very similar — but one’s a known pest, and the other’s a serious threat.

🔸 German Wasp (Vespula germanica)
– Smaller (about the size of a $1 coin)
– Bright yellow and black stripes
– Usually nests underground
– Annoying, but already common in NZ

🔸 Yellow-Legged Hornet (Vespa velutina)
– Bigger (around 24 mm long)
– Dark brown body with yellow legs
– Builds big paper nests high in trees
– New invader — kills honeybees and native pollinators
