Honey day. This is a task i should love, given the result, but i hate it. An hour in a hot beesuit is bad enough, but the stickiness rhat takes over every kitchen surface is all too much. I wish i could say that was done for the year, but no, ill be doing it again in February when its even hotter.

Pepinos are finally starting to play ball. Theyve been flowering since mid spring, without any setting fruit due to the cold spring temps. At long last i can see one forming. The flowers look like purple tomato flowers, as theyre also part of the solanum family. The fruit is like a small melon, with thinner skin and fewer seeds. The bushes are meant to be "compact" but 1 is over a metre high and the other 2 sprawling all over the place. Which is fine, if they produce...or theyre out, joining bananas, naranjilla, gingko nut, babaco, orangeberry and dwarf anything which all failed to fruit and went the way of the mulcher.

We have entered the zucchini a day phase, from ONE plant...there are 3. These are a parthenocarpic variety of seed, which don't require pollination. Which sounds great until you are faced with actually eating them all!

So, i was busy saying to hubby that it was definitely not a plum year but everything else was looking great. I forgot about this particular tree which is separate from the other 4 plums. Until this winter it lived next to an old magnolia which got rot and we chopped down. The fruit set is like nothing ive ever seen. Now, given its very tall, how on earth to.protect from the birds...

I think my Rapunzel cherry toms are living up to the hype. First ones just starting to ripen now, these were sown sometime in August.

My 1 year asparagus crowns are now planted out into their dedicated bed and are sending up lots of fern. In 2 or 3 years all that fern will be edible-sized spears. I have a few older crowns that i transplanted but while still alive, they are sulking. Another year and they might play ball. Gardening is truly a game for the patient!

Got a bit ahead of myself today and pulled about half the garlic. Lots of brooming still present - fine to eat, but no good for storing - some varieties seem ready and others not. These are mostly Te Mata Pearl and Rose and the sizes are good. Having pulled half i can see i am going to need to.plant twice as much next year!
You can clearly see the difference between brooming bulbs and normal in the 2nd pic

Thinning time. I absolutely hate this job cos i feel like im throwing away future food! But in fact if you dont thin, not only are the fruit competing for space, but the sugars within the tree. Too many fruit will give you significantly less sweet results. So, goodbye to many hundreds of baby apples and pears

It's nearly time to.start harvesting garlic. Ive pulled these ones early as they have what is known as "witches broom", which is where individual cloves start sprouting and there.is no overall bulb wrap. These taste just the same - powerful and delectable, after many months of old garlic - but dont store well. Brooming is caused by fluctuating weather conditions and/or excessive nitrogen - ive been feeding them my homemade sludge of seaweed, fish and poo, not sure if that qualifies as nitrogen or not - but weve certainly had hot/cold spells for a few months now. The rest of the crop looks ok and apparently its time to harvest when the bottom leaves brown off.

Everybody loves a nice fresh OJ, and it doesnt get better than straight off the tree.
These are uglifruit, a cross between a tangelo and a grapefruit, which ripen a long time beyond orange season, making them extra valued! Theyre also massive so you dont need many for your morning oj.

First potato harvest. These are Rocket variety which are really quick to mature, and have provided a creditable amount of around 10kgs from 1 small bag of seed. Potatoes are great in between crops when youve finished your first round of winter brassicas but its too early for summer crops. Our deep, friable beds generally dont do very well with root crops but im not complaining about this. New potatoes and chives coming up!
