Many potential tiny home buyers are excited about new Government proposal changing the rules and making it easier to have granny flats. So let's highlight key points:

📍 'Granny flat' is a common term to describe a small, self-contained house.

📍 The Government is aiming to provide an exemption for simple standalone granny flats up to 60 m².

📍 The exemption will apply to 1 granny flat per site only, and it must be put near a main residential unit.

📍 The new 60 m² rule will include a plumbed toilet, shower, and kitchenette.

📍 With proposed new Schedule in the Building Act, there will be no need to undergo a complicated building and resource consent process.

📍 Any changes proposed will not come into place until mid 2025.

📍 This is a great start towards removing unnecessary consenting requirements and enabling affordable housing for New Zealanders.
