Dune House

"Other worlds.
A garden always sits in a cultural context. It has a relationship with place but it is also a world within a world. A place to escape to other worlds and explore different ideas. When a client has a big dream the skill of the designer is to be able to weave dream into place to create a journey elsewhere whilst merging gently the borders between place."

The garden works hard to lap against the architecture with natural form and flow rather than compete with its' sharp lines.
The garden could be a world away but its context is retained with the landscape.

"When we first draw our plans we start like a bird in the sky looking down from above. A planning document to start the process.
It's only been in recent years that we've been able to return to this view once a garden has begun to grow. A certain magic returning to see what was sketched out by hand come to life in this way.
It is a big garden!"

"There are many paths to the perfect garden but it helps to have some advice along the way. So I’ll offer one rule, always keep the dream big. Expand your horizons, make the garden beds 4m deep not 2m. But don’t start big. Start like a garden, one season at a time.

Now down in Queenstown it has horizons big enough for the aspirations of it’s gardeners. The garden dream sat alongside the dream home but the planting began on the edges of the valley softening and framing views, avenues along the winding drive. Years before the house foundations were laid the setting was quietly growing with annual plantings and planning.

We created layers connected to each wing of the house layering deliberately overtime. Subtle changes in material and pattern to create a sense of a home lived in and loved rather than rushed for one moment in time.
Because beauty isn’t in one solitary idea. It’s in the layering and editing and the belief in a process. A story that unfolds with patience and gratitude. One season at a time."

Re visiting Oneroa, one of our fave projects from 2022.

"This site is set in the Waitemata harbor, off the Eastern coast of Aotearoa on the outer island of Waiheke. The island has a dry Mediterranean-like climate, with rocky cliffs. The planting is a weaving of the local coast and a cultural landscape of exotic planting that captures the colors of the sky and the sea beneath. The client held special plants that came from family and friends with existing Olive trees onsite that were carefully worked around and transplanted as needed. Stone from the local quarry was used to form the walls that are a collaboration between craftsman, designer, and the land itself."

A very special garden is evolving on the plains adjacent to Lake Hāwea. Xanthe discusses the journey of garden creation, from the initial relationship, the first site visits, the first workings of the bony soil, to the iterations and growth which are transforming this site into a home.

"As we look out across the plain, watching rabbits zig zag in the summer haze, we talk about a garden, about a kōwhai forest restored, about fields of flowers."

This design development for this project started in 2019 in collaboration with Glamuzina Architects and Studio AGD. The first stages involved extensive restoration of native plantings on steep areas of the site and protection of the pastural areas around the property. It was agreed the house would be moved over a few metres so we could retain some of the mature trees on the site. The vision for the pool was to create a space that floated seamlessly in the landscape but still complied with safety regulations. The pool was placed to catch the light, not just a place to swim and relax but to provide views of the sweeping Hawkes Bay sky. Also to connect the visitor with the landscape that rolls out to the coast in Haumoana. There will be more photos of this garden as it grows and matures and we have had the privilege of revisiting other areas over the years. Built with care by local team Jensen Projects who have been a key collaborator in the success of this project. A good example of how time and relationship are two key elements that make great gardens and design.

A Courtyard Garden - New post on our website (link in bio) … This garden was designed to bring depth, softness and layered greenery to a small urban site in Wellington. At its heart is a courtyard that the home opens out on to, where curved edges create generous planting zones and nooks for sitting, gathering, and enjoying the garden from inside and out. The garden and landscaping was designed in close collaboration with the clients Mark Leong and Lucy Coote from Studio MYLA and Salad Days Ceramics, who last night won an NZIA national award in the Alterations and Additions category. Congratulations!

Very grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate on this beautiful home designed by Elmore Booth. The color palette shifts with the seasons and mirrors the tones hidden in the local soil and stone that also appear through the architecture. A blend of natives and exotics create year round interest. The contour of the garden was carefully engineered using stone and a seat doubling as retaining to create a sheltered area separated from parking and the wind. It's an honor to have this project launched on the giving you a preview of the garden. Thank you to both Libby and Oli and our wonderful clients for trusting in our creative process all the way.
