We're thrilled to share that 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗮 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 has won the NZIA Southern Architecture Award for Enduring Architecture. The award celebrates the lasting impact of great architecture as well as excellence in design.

Designed as a composition of discrete elements carefully positioned within a dramatic alpine landscape, Wanaka House sits low in a gentle gully where it gains privacy and protection from the prevailing north-westerly winds while maintaining expansive mountain views. The full height glazing of the main pavilion is grounded by the solidity of the timber-clad garage and guest studio, while a sculpted gabion wall filled with local Cardrona River stones choreographs the arrival.

A low-slung retreat sheltered under a softly folding roof, 𝗣𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 carries the double meaning of 𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘢 (shelter, refuge, coming together) and the Dutch 𝘨𝘦𝘻𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨 (warmth, joy, time with loved ones). Anchored by in-situ spine walls and wrapped in warm cedar, the retreat is grounded in nature, sunlight, and connection.

Rather than competing with the grandeur of its surroundings, 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗮 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 is designed to enhance it: framing views, creating shelter, and establishing moments of intimacy while maintaining a light physical presence on the land. Its thoughtful and measured response to the site anticipated many of the passive environmental principles that shape design today.
